koboyz: Sony A8F or LG C8?

Your last two posts in this thread don’t make any sense. You have asked two unintelligible questions - what do you want to know?

- I’m indecisive to buy between this two brands.
With my current knowledge, Sony has better image processing power.
The pricing from the current market confused me.
Hence , the first question on pricing was posted.
- Secondly, I want to know the opinion from geek zone members since I think members here are more or less Tech Savvy.

So, are those two questions intelligible for you ?

They do now that you have explained - but as posted “Why LG C8 is expensive than Sony A8F?” and “Sony A8F or LG C8?” made no sense at all.

Got myself 55” Sony XBR-A8F last Sunday.
Aside from slow Android OS response, all functions are excellent.
Just an annoying fact, cinema pro is quite dark. I just use vivid mode for movie.

Retailers really need an education with HDR.

Each to their own with mode selection, however cinema pro is one of the more accurate modes.
Vivid is for overly bright rooms, so I guess your room is to bright, this will be very tiring on your visual system.

Ideally your room wants to have a mild low level of ambient light.

When in HDR mode the panel should be about 100nits of light level at 50% level of dynamic range. This was the old standard for HD for full range levels. The problem is that everyone is used to an old range where they typically set by comfort 150~200nits as usable value for home viewing. (plasmas could never do this btw). Actually this was my typical target range for most calibrations if the display was capable.

These new OLED's have two distinct modes, Rec709 and Rec2020, the earlier is I still raise the contrast to 150nits or thereabouts, depending on the customers viewing conditions and preference. The rec2020 is kind of fixed because you are maximizing the panel limited by the panel capability and roll off. That mid point 100nit is there as a grading reference, raise it and you clip/roll off the higher signal levels typically this is damaging to the image. These panels peak about 600~700nits where the image could be graded at 4000nits.

So, HDR signals are designed to be viewed in mild lighting conditions as the vast majority of the signal resides in the 0~50% part of the range. This can make HDR look dim. Darken the environment, your eyes adjust and it isn't as dim, then the highlights really pop and the image is actually vastly better. This also improves the darker regions of the image as you will be able to perceptual see mild gradations lost when the room is bright or set in modes like vivid.

Given that the main point of this thread is TV pricing, I can’t see the point of your post here.

With this in mind, I have started a new thread for discussion of 4K TVs.

The first time I've seen my W8 for less than I paid😭.

https://www.noelleeming.co.nz/shop/televisions/televisions/oled-televisions/60-69-uhd-oled-tvs/lg-oled65w8pta-65-4k-ultra-hd-hdr-wallpaper-oled-television/prod162964.html

Still not a trifling sum, but an outstanding TV. Kind of surprised NL haven't knocked 25% off the RRP ($11999) like they would normally. I guess if they had it at $10K prior to the sale they have to honour the 25% off that price.

Sony KD65X9000F $3,119 @ Noel Leeming - lowest since launch according to PriceSpy

LG OLED65C8PTA  $4,978 @ Noel Leeming

Sony KD65A8F      $4,679 @ Noel Leeming

I guess these might be low enough if we don't want to wait for Boxing Day deals.

JB Hifi - as of lunchtime today these are at:-

Which are the lowest I've seen them at - surprising really given the state of the NZ dollar.

I noticed during the week that Harvey Norman now have the LG B8 in stock. Guy indicated they could do the 55 for about $3300 which is steep considering the C8 had almost dropped to that.

It'll be interesting to see what price the B8 hits during boxing day sales this year.

I'm over in Sydney at present and the 55 C8 is around $2200 - $2300 in stores. 65" is still close to $4000

While I thought it can be any lower than the pricing above before Boxing Day, Noel Leeming has a good surprise for us today:

Sony KD65X9000F $2,586

Sony KD55X9000F $1,795

Is it still necessary to wait for Boxing Day deals?

That's a brilliant price. The best that 65" TV has been before has been around $3200 or so.

For those who can't justify the cost of an OLED it's probably the best panel around. While it's not perfect it's pretty damn good.

Black Friday sale at Noel Leeming:

LG OLED55C8PTA $3,219

Sony KD55A8F $3,266
Sony KD65A8F $3,998

There are a few models of OLEDs that I don't know about as well, itching to pull the trigger at this price point, but which one to choose?
