I will also test running the MySky from the receiver as well (one day when Himself is not around) to see if it would fail the HAF.

Buy a Harmony remote and the significant other would be able to control everything with a single device. 😃

The remote that comes with that QLED TV is a universal remote. Just needs to be programmed via the TV. I use my one Samsung remote to control all my devices - including Sky.

Arguably it’s not as intuitive and powerful as a Harmony but possible and one gets used to it quickly.

The Onkyo has already had 2 HDMI repairs done to it. When it goes for a 3rd time I'll be looking for another brand.

setup correctly, you ("Himself") should only need one remote.

having said that, not sure how the MySky box is like with HDMI-CEC.

The TV is now setup.

I have got the MySky connected to the TV for now, and the TV remote can change the sky channel, nice.

I dont think it will do live pause, rewind, fast forward etc though.

The sky picture looks good, better than on the old Sony I reckon.

Does anyone know if the remote and the connect box need line of sight? (I presume the remote talks to the box and not the screen)

Edit to add: and what is the best way to dispose of the old TV?

It has a fault causing vertical pin stripes all over the screen, so cant sell it as a used tv.

I would fully endorse a Logitech remote with a smart hub.

You no longer have to point the remote at the TV (the hub can do the blasting) and if you use the supplied IR kit you can hide all the components out of site. Super simple once you have it programmed.

Jeepers, those Logitech Harmony hub thingies are a bit spendy.

It was hard enough justifying the QLED to Himself.

Yup it does do live pause, record etc. If setup properly, its just the play/pause button on my Samsung remote and depending on the remote - no it might not need line of sight as some of the Samsung remotes are Bluetooth now.

They are, but they do everything at the bush of a command, installed one at the in laws that don't want a bar of tech and its changed their lives exponentially for sky/netflix/apple TV and general Radio.

Are you AKL based by chance?

It's a very basic remote that came with the tv, hard to imagine it doing anything too spectacular.

Not to keep picking away when you've got the thing set up and working nicely, but I can't see any logical reason why things would work better with the Sky box plugged directly into the TV instead of the receiver. As long as your receiver, your TV and the Sky box all support CEC (they do), the commands from the TV remote should be passed from the TV through the receiver and then through to the Sky box.

You will get better audio quality (at least in theory) and probably more reliable performance in the long run by hooking your devices to the receiver rather than the TV. In my experience, ARC is a bit of a flaky technology and as previously noted only supports a limited subset of audio formats. It usually works ok on my TV but occasionally has weird issues for no obvious reason.

@allio I notice that the receiver doesnt always show up as an input device on the TV, and the devices plugged into the receiver dont show up as sources on the TV either.

I'm not sure if they are meant to or not though.

So for now, the MySky is going to stay plugged into the TV, where Himself can find it if need be.

...but that's not. The normal use of a receiver is that it becomes your TV's sole source. You switch between sources on the receiver and leave the TV permanently set to HDMI1 (or whatever the receiver is plugged into). The sources plugged into the receiver don't show up as sources on the TV (and there is no need for them to).

So for now, the MySky is going to stay plugged into the TV, where Himself can find it if need be.

2 ways of doing it,

1. everything plugged into the TV, you use the tv remote to change the input to your different sources, ARC sends the sound to the AMP, the AMP stays on the tv setting to provide sound, tv remote controls volume of the amp. amp should turn on with the TV.

2. everything is plugged into the amp, you select different modes on the amp to select the different sources, the amp controls the sound.

personally i find #1 easier as there is no mucking round with the amp and the TV controls everything bar your different inputs

I actually have mine set up like #2 but works the same way where the amp controls the inputs. I bought a learning remote for my DishTV Freeview recorder so that plus most of my gear is Sony interconnected with HDMI, pretty much any remote will control the volume and power on/off. The TV will turn the amp on and off if I use the DishTV or TV remotes.

Makes life so much easier when you can just pick up the closest remote to do the basics.
