My 2 year old Panasonic 4k TV has a PLEX app.  

 

I've bought a QNAP 2bay NAS, with PLEX server.  PLEX appears to work well on my phone and my computer.  The NAS works well streaming to my TV via DLNA, but when I try to play something through the PLEX app on my TV, the stream stuters and skips.

 

I guess the PLEX app for the TV just sucks.  I'm new to PLEX, but does anyone have any bright ideas to fix?  

 

The PLEX app on my phone also doesn't want to cast to my TV, when other apps will.  Possibly because I haven't activated the app yet?

Don't know enough about your setup. But if you're doing this all over wifi to the tv or w/e..... I am wondering if it is up for the task.

 

 

 

Are you direct streaming 4k video...or is the NAS trans-coding?

Ive got a 2014 sony tv that did similar and the plex app stopped working, wound up having to acces the plex app from within the opera store app on the tv to get it working as for some reason plex pulled support or stopped it. Is there a similar option for Panasonic TVs?
Pretty sure to use it from the iphone requires a one off payment of $8.99 or something similar

What format is the content you're trying to play?  Is it set to direct play or stream/transcode?  If you go into the settings of the Plex app on the TV what is in there?  You'll want to Direct Play wherever possible.  The NAS might not be up to the task of transcoding especially if it's 4K content or HEVC.

I'm pretty sure it's direct play, since it works on all devices I've tried EXCEPT the Panasonic TV.

 

I've tried 4k, 1080p and 480p content, all the same, which is why I suspect its the TV app.

 

Yes to WIFI, but all relevant parts are using AC I believe, and streaming over DLNA works just fine from the NAS to the TV

Sorry...deleted my post. Have had some wine....

Plex app on Panasonic tvs seems to be buggy. According to a thread over a Plex....dated around Oct 2018.

Thought so.

 

Moving forward, what's a good wife friendly option.  Buy the app and cast it?  Buy a HDMI stick/box that will run PLEX well?  Any recommendations accepted...

From memory the Panasonic and old Sony Opera store app required non-secure streaming.

 

As a test try disabling "Secure connections" in Setting > Network.

That doesn't mean the TV is direct playing. It's a per client setting.

I had massive issues with my partners Xbox One which would go into a buffering loop or simply not play some content. My server is totally fine and up to the task but the Plex app on Xbox is just complete garbage.

 

Today I went out and grabbed one of the Smartvu X Android Dongles (Noel Leeming Link) and instantly - problem solved. Streams all content fine and has Chromecast support also. She is incredibly happy with it and for the price it is actually very good value with what you get.

 

I note this is 4K capable - the streams going to it are mostly direct without transcoding required (unlike her Xbox) so this may be a good shot as a cheaper Plex player. Also has the added bonus of Freeview streaming, Netflix etc. The remote is simple to use also.

 

On another note - check if your NAS is capable of transcoding (see: https://blog.qnap.com/things-you-need-to-know-about-hardware-transcoding-for-plex/) as this will help immensely.

I have no issues using Plex app on my Panasonic OLED 2017 model. It is wired Ethernet. Pretty sure the 2017 models did not have WiFi. Have you tried it using over a wired connection instead and is your TV firmware up to date?

whats the model of the QNAP nas?

 

is it using hardware decoding?

 

when you play something in plex on the tv - what does PMS report in activity (with show details clicked)? is it transcoding? direct streaming? post a screenshot

I've got a 2018 Panasonic OLED and have no problems whatsoever running PLEX using both wireless and wired connections. No stutters, jitters, mumbles or fumbles. At work at the moment so can't check the settings for you so, if I remember, I'll check when I get home tonight.
