Hello everyone...

I have a couple of technics turntables, they are SL1200's, the classic type. However last night when I was playing a record I noticed that the left channel for one of them was not producing any noise. The usual twisting and manipulation of the plug failed to fix the problem so now I am faced with the left white channel plug being redundant.

I tried to take the plug apart and then reconnect things but with no luck.

Has anyone got any easy solutions to replacing this plug? Is it a tricky task? Do I need any tools? I was going to take the whole turntable into a shop to get this fixed but if there is an easier, cheaper way I would be interested to learn what this is...

many thanks.

I used to have one of those turntables many moons ago before the kids wrecked it...

By the sound of it, the wiring inside the plug is now completely broken.  However, it's easy enough to replace it.  Just cut the old one off, and buy a replacement at Jaycar.  You will need a soldering iron, some sidecutters and some solder.  Jaycar will have all those items too, if you don't already have them.

If replacing the plug doesn't solve the problem, it is possible that the cartridge has failed rather than the plug.

In that case, it would be worth swapping the cartridge from your other turntable and trying it.
