Press menu button, go to TV settings, then into picture, then look for picture format. If it's available it should be in there. Lets you select widescreen, super zoom, 16:9 zoom etc.

Recommend auto or widescreen selection. Also I think each input is set separately, so make sure on sky channel/input when go there.

I have a phillips where there's an option button on remote that lets me get to menu lot faster, maybe not on yours but method above  be pretty standard.

leonie47: TV has a picture auto format option that works through HDMI
do you think you might be able to tell me where i might be able to find that on my tv its a sanyo plazma 42inch wide screen
you will make me one very happy lady if i can get this problem fixed.
thankyou

Your TV does not have a problem. I can't understand why you want this fixed.

I have a 50" widescreen plasma and I don't have a problem with watching content with side bars. Most programming is in widescreen now anyway.  I would much prefer to watch full screen programmes with side bars, rather than having an ugly stretched picutre that makes everyone look fat.

Kind of on topic.
I have MySkyHDi and Sky Digital (pace) both are set to 16:9 as are the TVs.  When watching some 4:3 source channels (e.g. cartoon network) Mysky shows the correct aspect and inserts side bars but the pace decoder doesn't (hence stretched picture-fatovision).  All the widescreen channels on both decoders operate as they should.  Is this something Sky need to address, it would appear they are sending a different signal to the MySky and the Pace?  Or am I missing a vital setting (has happened before!).

Check your settings on Pace one, make sure it has 4:3 content to be pillar boxed.

Don't have one in front of me so can't be more specific sorry.

The older Pace does NOT have the ability to pillarbox 4:3 channels, so use your TV to format. Most older DVB-S receivers don't do this. The signal sent by Sky is obviously identical being a 4:3 ratio one. Learn to know whether the formatting is done by broadcaster, stb or TV.

The pace will be outputting a WSS to tell the tv that the content is 4:3

Unfortunatly most tvs ignore it, or only impliment it in NTSC mode, so your stuck toggling the picture aspect on the TV untill you either change the box for a mysky HDI which has to pillarbox since there are no 4:3 modes in HD, or sky pull finger and move more channels to being widescreen.

Do any of the Sky Digital STBs have the 'show 4:3 in pillarbox' setting as an option?

Yeah, thanks, I have a pretty good handle on which broadcasts are Full Height Anamorphic and which are standard 4:3.   My newer TVs don't have an automatic aspect setting anyhow, its just a PITA having to change the aspect all the time and I would prefer if Sky just got on with widecreening the rest of their channels.

Only the DVRs have decent aspect control like giving 14:9 - I dont know if thats present on the HDI but its great on the standard mysky since it is usable and not too annoying with old 4:3 stuff on wide channels, sort of like the compromise that you get on analog on 1

So since the widescreen signaling is part of the digital signal, surely it would just be a firmware update for existing Sky Digital STBs to be able to pillarbox 4:3 shows?  Just like MySkyHDi (and I assume MySky from what you said above) can.  Or is it a limitation of the 20th century electronics in the STBs that I will need to wait until (if ever) Sky finishes widescreening all its channels?

Why should they bother? The old boxes are a dead end, and its an incentive to move to a PVR box which opens up the PPV on demand and other earners, plus the added monthly charge for it.

No idea if the hardware in them can pillarbox internally, its always a possibility since they manage to shrink the image when you are in the menus but really, its effort for nothing for sky.
