I am curious however. It it's still working fine, why the need to replace? Unless you can identify something specific a new TV offers that the current one doesn't and which you need (eg HDR if you are a movie fan or a bigger screen), then a 6 year old set is likely pretty decent. $2,500 is a fair bit of money to spend without a good reason to do so.

For many - myself included - the move from (nearly any) LCD to OLED will be a ‘good reason’!

Interesting one - suspect existing tv valueless so the challenge is how to get rid of it.

Things are pretty marginal improvements nowadays (to me at least) so gonna sweat something like a TV until it craps out and pray when I buy the new one they will take the old one away. I get everyone else’s mileage will vary…..

I am looking at upgrading the family TV from a 40inch Sony circa 2012 to something a bit larger, a bit newer. It really is an upgrade for my retired father who is at home all day and uses it all the time

Been looking at the Sony OLED models and am thinking the XR55A80J as it comes in at 'just over budget' - I was thinking 65inch over 55inch, but the budget wasn't that large.

Not really sure how to compare specs and I know that upgrading the TV will probably lead to an upgrading of the speakers and and I am pretty sure the Stereo Receiver (?) is already broken ...

Got a feeling that the XR55A80J will be my choice. Now to figure out what I can get for the old one!

Pretty much at that point myself. Will more than likely purchase this exact model; and then pay Noels a bit extra so they can deliver, install and remove the current TV.
Otherwise I need to worry about the packaging and the old TV disposal myself.

Unless someone has a decent sale around Easter

My son has an LG 4K SDR TV, and he would dearly love to buy a decent 65" Dolby Vision/4K HDR, but he just can't stretch his budget to buy one. So, as Fathers do, I am going to help him out (great excuse for wifey) by replacing my 2016 Sony 65XE9305 LCD (great TV BTW) which I use in my living room, with a 65" OLED.

I am looking at possibly purchasing Panasonics 2021 flagship model, the JZ2000 with built in Dolby Atmos soundbar with 7.1 capabilities. I have also looked at many other models including LG's G1 and C1 options, Sony's A90J and A80J. I really like the option of having the all-in-one JZ2000, which has great reviews on both the Video and Audio. The Sony A90J also gets positive reviews for both, but the Audio isn't quite up to the Panasonic Atmos set up. If I go for one of the cheaper (but still awesome) options, I would have to also buy an Atmos soundbar; I'm looking at the Sonos Arc, which retails for $1699. Add the price of the Sonos to the price of say, the LG C1, and its right up there with the JZ2000 price.

None of this is going to happen soon, but definitely this year. Might get a decent price drop in the Black Friday or Boxing Day sales.

FYI: When I bought my Panasonic GZ1000 OLED from Harvey Norman, I made sure that I got a 30 day price promise with it. This covered the period between BF and BD sales. Sure enough, the TV was $602 cheaper on Boxing Day, so I bought myself a Panasonic 4K Blu-ray player with the rebate.

I just bought one of these, and cannot recommend it fiercely enough. It is a stunning TV and the stuff about brightness is wildly overblown – no issues at all.

We paid $2700ish from JB on sale – Everywhere else was showing $2999. I would suggest waiting for the Easter sales this weekend, probably find a good deal then.

I have also had a closer look at the 65" A80J. It would save me a few pennies, and reviews say that the sound is excellent. Saving me the extra money for a soundbar.

How do you find the audio?

Found a great video on the Sony A80J TV. From Caleb Denison of Digital Trends.

NB: The VRR update is now available in a firmware update.

The audio is great in the midrange and fine in the upper, but the lower register is almost non-existent. Sony's full panel audio tech is really impressive but if you want any kind of rumble, you definitely need an external sound system.

Is there an option to add a woofer?

@Movieman
I don’t think so. It doesn’t seem to have a dedicated out put for just a sub, so unless there is a wireless one, you might have to spring for a system. I plug my circa-2000 Sony hi-fi into the 3.5 headphone jack and it works great.
