lurker:

Movieman:

Did you find any good deals lurker?

No I walked away. By my estimation the slow shuffling queue had about 400 people in it.

After 15 minutes to reach the mall entrance I could see the scale of it and decided any discount wasn't worth my time.

Hugely successful opening for JB Hifi, they must be happy with that kind of response.

Nice to see that they are doing well in a very competitive market.

With the release of Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning - Part One last Wednesday, I had a read of several reviews of the 4K Ultra HD disc. All of the reviews were very positive and Video/Audio generally scored maximum. My go to reviewer is Casimir Harlow from the UK AV Forums website. Here are two snippets from his review:-

Video: "... a great looking movie, suitably larger than life, and a disc that allows you to enjoy the hell out of it"

Audio: "... absolutely pounding with some of the most impressive LFE usage of any disc in 2023"

He also gave it his "UNMISSABLE" award. Full Review

Its a title that is on my wish list along with Gran Turismo and The Equalizer 3. I'm hoping for a 20% off sale on Black Friday and Boxing Day. I've already pre-ordered the Oppenheimer SteelBook

Gran Turismo SteelBook has now sold out before release on JBAU website. Don't think it will be back this time.

Oppenheimer and TMNT: Mutant Mayhem SteelBooks are marked as "nearly gone" while The Equalizer 3 Steel is marked as "selling fast".

Its good to see these items selling out. There's hope for physical media yet 😁

Such a pity the 4K's desired permanently exceed the budget available...

It looks increasingly like Mighty Ape are going to give up on 4K Ultra HD physical media. They have very little stock and a lot of the titles on their website are only available through third party sellers. They are still getting a few new titles, but not all.

Barbie was released today and considering that it is the box-office #1 film of 2023, it seems strange that they don't have it on any of the three disc formats. Another title that comes to mind is The Flash, which they also didn't stock. I think that competition from JBNZ is part of the problem for MA; JB undercut them on almost every release, even if only by 2 cents 😁. Anyway, MA have four 4K Ultra HD titles on sale ; they are:-

$22.00

Blade Runner 2049 (2017)

Gladiator (2000)

Highlander (1986)

Pulp Fiction (1994)

Although we have to wait another week for the Gran Turismo 4K Ultra HD release, it has already been released in other countries and by all accounts its a reference A/V presentation.

Ralph Potts is the physical media reviewer for the American AVS Forums, and I chose to post his thoughts on the disc from Sony.

Dolby Vision (100/100)

Resolution received a boost with the differences between the UHD and 1080p renderings being appreciable. Close-ups tend to look amazing, with resolvable texture visible in interior/exterior locations, physical features, and backgrounds being quite noticeable. The exterior shots of the racetracks have superb depth which added an enriching, and eye-catching aesthetic to them.

The application of HDR isn’t always on display but, when applied, adds an enriching visual element. Specular highlights during the various explosions look terrific. Gran Turismo features pyrotechnics and mixed bright/dark elements, all of which shine in Ultra High Definition.

Dolby Atmos (100/100)

This is a surprisingly good presentation that incorporates a plethora of head turning effects that bring the entire system platform to life. The sequences involving the initial round of tryouts and racing segments, contain a host of effects, near field pans and, ambient extension that rotate around the soundstage, shifting overhead, passing by at ear level and coming directly at the listening position.

It's not just the action that sounds great either. On several occasions while watching, I found myself saying aloud (with a smile on my face) this mix sounds great. This is an entertaining Atmos presentation that brings everything together in a resplendent blend of room traversing, and well-balanced sound that shows what the format is capable of.

Final Thoughts:

Inspired by a true story, Gran Turismo is a coming-of-age drama/biopic that fires on all cylinders, making for a memorable, and, feel good film, that is invigorating, moving and, fun. It arrives on Blu-ray in this Ultra HD Blu-ray/Blu-ray release from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment featuring terrific Ultra HD video, involving lossless surround sound, including a rip-roaring Dolby Atmos immersive mix, and a fan friendly supplemental package. Gran Turismo doesn’t break the mold but, it’s based on a great human-interest story that provides the type of adrenaline fueled fun and heartwarming drama that genre fans feed on. If it’s your cup of tea, it looks and sounds great on Ultra HD Blu-ray/Blu-ray.

Two of Umbrella Entertainments recent Australian releases have suddenly appeared on the JBNZ website. Available to buy immediately.

I made information links when I was also including Australian releases, so I'll just link to them.

Talk To Me (2023) [$41.98] #3117754

Possession (1981)  [54.98] N.B. the link states that video is HDR10, but it is actually 4K SDR #3117112

Also: Meg 2: The Trench has been belatedly pushed back to November 15th. Yesterday the Standard Edition was available to add to cart, but the SteelBook Edition wasn't. Now neither are available until next Wednesday 🙄

And: Some of the artwork on the JBNZ 4K Ultra HD format hasn't been updated. Check my links for the correct artwork (except possibly To Kill a Mockingbird)

The JBAU website has Blue Beetle (2023) up for pre-order in both Standard and SteelBook Editions.  It seems like Warner Bros. are following Paramount's lead of only including a Blu-ray disc with the SteelBook release. This would be acceptable if they reduced the price of the Standard release, but its like a lot of supermarket items; reduced contents, but still pay the same price.

Expend4les (2023) added

Also added to their website is The Color Purple (1985), but no The Fugitive (1993) yet.

I'm expecting all of these titles to be released in NZ.
