Apparently Universal underestimated the demand for their recent 4K Ultra HD release of Oppenheimer. Collector's in the US and Europe are fuming that both the Standard and SteelBook releases are sold out everywhere. Reportedly, Universal have got their disc presses working 24/7 to "replenish" the unexpected demand for the title. Ebay scalpers have been asking up to US$200 for the SteelBook Edition.

A quote from the film's director Christopher Nolan;

“If you buy a 4K UHD, you buy a Blu-ray it’s on your shelf, it’s yours. No company is going to break into your house and take it from you and repossess it. It’s yours, and you own it. That’s never really the case with any form of digital distribution.”

Oppenheimer was a special experience for us (IMAX experience) so we pre-ordered two copies - one each from JB AU and JB NZ. This was to mitigate the risk, should one become damaged in transit.

JB AU and NZ have delivered damaged steelbooks to us in the past (it’s very rare, however).

Thankfully, they both arrived in as-new condition : )

We don’t mind owning two and we aren’t “scalpers” looking to rip someone off. We used this strategy with the Top Gun 2 steelbook also.

Cheers!

I also bought the Oppenheimer SteelBook from JBNZ. I wasn’t expecting it to have the title debossed. The debossing was a nice touch and just added to a good package.

Scanavo's SteelBooks; some collector's will pay anything to get them, others are not interested and don't know what the fuss is about. I was one of the collector's who would pay (almost) anything to secure a Limited Edition SteelBook. I still collect them, but I stay away from the boutique SteelBook producers and sellers who issue very Limited Editions and charge a King's ransom for them. I have to admit, these SteelBooks are Premium products and generally have exclusive artwork, embossed/debossed and glossy finishes.

A Chinese group calling themselves Blufans were (I think) the first SteelBook only group aimed at collector's. Over the years they have produced some stunning products and they are probably the number one Limited Edition SteelBook producers in the world. I have their very first film with a metal case. I say metal case because that's exactly what it was. Blufans started by issuing Chinese made Viva Metal Box (VMB) cases which were excellent. Made from stronger metal than SteelBooks and differing mainly by their spines. I have eighteen of the VMB's (mainly Disney) and I was unhappy that they were discontinued due to Scanavo's lawsuit against them.

Other groups began to surface, looking to make a killing from the SteelBook phenomena that was building amongst collector's. Manta Lab (Hong Kong) and Film Arena (Czech Republic) are just two of several groups that now exist. Manta Lab are becoming the preferred issuer, because they are easier to access compared to Blufans which are almost exclusively available through group buys at Blu-ray.com. All of the SteelBooks are manufactured by Scanavo who originated in 1991 and have offices in Europe, North America and Hong Kong.

I believe that SteelBooks will become the norm rather than the exception for physical media distribution; Some Studios are already favouring SteelBook releases by having both a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray included, while Standard releases only have the 4K disc included.

What got me posting this item on SteelBooks, is that Blufans next three releases under the grand name of Blufans Premium (BP), are Disney/Marvel films, but no discs will be included. Collector's are expected to pay for the SteelBook then buy the Standard Edition release to insert the discs inside 😒 The three titles in Wave One are BP1 - Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, BP2 - Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and BP3 - Shang Chi and the  Legend of the Ten Rings. Lucky collector's who can actually access this Group Buy on Blu-ray.com, can expect to pay US$180 for the One-Click sets for each SteelBook, which includes: the Double Sided Lenticular Edition, Single Sided Lenticular Edition and Full Slip Edition. Each Edition includes the SteelBook plus fancy slipcases and a Photo Book and Movie Art Cards. So you are buying three identical SteelBooks just to get some fancy slipcovers, a Photo Book and Movie Art Cards and they are fighting over them 😁

The Double Sided Lenticular Edition is also available individually for US$70, which seems to be the way to go for most collector's. Release date is January 24th and they have Sold Out!. These collector's I class as hard core SteelBook collector's as opposed to Movie collector's with SteelBook packaging. Each to their own, I say.

I have mentioned Shout Factory in another post, but I thought that I would start to include some or all of their and Kino Lorber 4K releases for our users who don't mind importing films that we are unlikely to get on 4K in the Australasian market.

Shout Factory are an American Boutique label, specializing in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD catalogue titles. They have an online store, but they only ship to USA and Canada. However, Amazon US stock most of their titles and some are available on Amazon AU occasionally.

Their latest pending release is The Man in the Iron Mask: Collector's Edition (1998) starring Leonardo Di Caprio, Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Gerard Depardieu and Gabriel Byrne. Available from Amazon US [US$29.99] which is US$6.00 cheaper than Shout Factory are asking. Amazon AU may also have it later as they don't usually take pre-orders.

THE MAN IN THE IRON MASK (1998) Collector's Edition • Release Date: December 29th

4K Ultra HD (Region Free) & Blu-ray (Region A Locked)

Louis XIII, King of France, had a son, Louis, who succeeded his father to the throne. But, known to very few, the heir had a twin brother, Philippe, hidden away after birth and forced to languish in prison, his identity unknown behind an iron mask. His brother, now grown and King Louis XIV, proved to be both corrupt and a tyrant. Louis sends Athos' son, Raoul off to certain death in war, so that he could have his woman for himself. Athos, together with two of the other Musketeers, Porthos and Aramis, swear revenge. Only D'Artagnan remains loyal to the crown, but will he join his former compatriots to free Philippe from prison, kill the king, and put Philippe on the throne in his place?

As stated above; Amazon US usually have Shout Factory and Kino Lorber releases available to import. I have found that if I add the titles that I would like to import to an import wish list and ... wait, I can pick them up at a reasonable price from Amazon US or Amazon AU at a later date. I have just bought Ronin (Kino Lorber) and The Magnificent Seven (1960, Shout Factory) from Amazon AU in their Black Friday sale for less than half the original release price.

Just something to think about. 🤔

As a matter of interest (or not), there's a 4K of Love Actually out at Amazon US, and other outlets presumably. I read a review and 'grain management' and 'hideous' are used in the same sentence. Might be worth bearing in mind...

Grain is a highly debated subject among movie lovers. The new James Cameron 4K releases have, apparently had some sort of new (Cameronised) grain management applied to them. Old school fans are doing their level best to find fault, others are claiming that the films look amazing. I guess we'll have to wait until we can have a look ourselves, but I reckon that I'll be with the "others".

Apparently my copies of Dial of Destiny and Titanic are coming on Tuesday, so I'll be able to have a look, but I'm far from a connoisseur...

I also wonder what the Titanic critics would be saying if this 4K version actually was the original version.
