I don't know if this is the right forum for this topic.

I am thinking of getting a 5750 or even 5770 for my HTPC, since they have low idle power (<20W) and would work reasonably well for 1080p gaming on my HDTV... but from pricespy, they are overpriced for like 50% compared to US retail prices ($129 and $159 USD).

Considering the high exchange rate we have to the US dollar at the moment, I am hoping it is just a supply issue on launch. Has anyone else considered getting one from oversea?

After you add international shipping you'll probably save about $20 NZD that's assuming you'll cheat and get it labelled a gift to avoid paying customs duty.

Is ~$20 worth the loss of convenience? Bbuying locally you get it immediately and it's far easier to return if you encounter a problem and so on.

Also as you suspect prices will come down over time, we're heading into the xmas season soon and it is a brand new model that has just recently been released.

$US179 vs $NZ331

If you modify the amazon price for a 75c kiwi and add 12.5% GST, you get $NZ268 vs $NZ331 which is $63 shipping and duty.

Not too bad for this guy. $331 is pretty good for a low-power 4870 equivalent.

Ascent is pretty expensive too (for a etailer with no physical stores anyway)..

It's a good price :) and considering the performance, wow, it eats up my 4870 1GB :( now I have to upgrade....my mate only bought a 4890 a week before the 5870/5850 came out, he's really kicking himself now

They will possibly drop a bit before christmas, especially as nvidia is going to have to drop it's current range a bit to compete. Only problem is, Nvidia doesn't have the power consumption ratings to match....just yet. Current reports put the GT300 out in a few weeks/months(Q4 2009) so that will hopefully mean some lesser cards come out, just a pity that Nvidia is struggling so much lately.

I'm not a fanboy of either, whichever is faster/good price ratio, I'll buy

The standing rule is.. if the GST would come to less then $50 then they don't change it.

Yeah, but companies would be bringing in like lots of at least 100 :) so there would be a large amount of GST on it

Yes, the 5870 is at least the performance equivalent of the 4870X2, plus low power and DX11 benefits.

If you care about gaming at 1080p, you might want one in your htpc.

As good as the 5870 is, i think the 5770 is good enough for most games (maybe not for Crysis) at 1080p.

yeah the 5770 would be fine :) my 4870 1gb runs crysis in Vista 64bit DX10 mode at 1650x1080 with around 35fps(full 8xAA, 16XAF), anything higher and it struggles.

Warhead runs nicely at 1080p, new NFS Shift runs well at 1080p, just have to see how Modern Warfare 2 runs....although I might put that on my PS3s

5750 is probably fine for a htpc, true HDMI pass through for Dolby and DTS looks nice... good bye expensive soundcard.
