Just thought I would post an update...

I have had the above config (with the Core i3) running now for about 2 weeks. I shelled out some more $$ and got a decent Antec Fusion HTPC case to put it all in. I did this to get something quiet, which looks good and also to get a reliable infrared remote receiver.

Performance wise everything seems to be going great. The only time I noticed an issue was when I was watching something I had recorded earlier while two other channels were recording. This created a few minor "blips" on the new recordings. Nothing major though, and hardly a situation that will occur too often for us. I'd probably put it down to not enough CPU grunt...

Overall I'm very happy with the results.

In terms of cost, hard to say since everything was sourced via wholesalers...

Things I don't like:
1) Lack of EPG - I have overcome this by using Big Screen EPG.
2) No method to convert h.264 WTV files into any other format. Hopefully someone will come up with a solution to this in the future.

For #2 try http://mcebuddy.com/Home.aspx

I haven't looked at it yet, but see it converts wtv and dvr-ms and removes commercials.
