I'm after a blu-ray player that is going to be reasonably musical. Can anyone suggest some blu-ray players that would be worth looking at and not too expensive?

I have an Onkyo 607 amp and Theophany 401 speakers (which are fantastic)

I'd imagine any BluRay player will be the same, assuming you're sending the digital audio stream to the receiver and having the receiver do the decoding.

The only time the player will make a difference is if you were having it do the decoding and then sending an analog signal to the receiver... and that'd be a pretty odd configuration.

Panasonic DMP-BD80, one of the best sounding BD players around and only $449 from Harvey Norman.

Experiment with HDMI and analogue connection.

Depending on your particular setup, one connection may sound better than the other.

Thanks for the comments.

I can't find any panasonic blu-ray reviews that talk about the audio - the price is pretty compelling though - will go and have a listen.

The Oppo products look really good - I wondered if anyone has tried one of these - the Oppo BDP-80 ($500 less than the 83) - the video sounds slightly compromised - I wonder how much difference that will make?

The Blu-ray video on the Oppo BDP-80 is the same as on the BDP-83, its only slightly less on the BDP-80 for standard DVD only. If your display is under 50" it just doesnt matter and you would never tell, believe me.  If you want great audio read this http://everythingaudionetwork.blogspot.com/2009/08/audiophile-review-oppo-bdp-83-universal.html
