Hi:

Anyone out there who has gotten a sony RDR-HX1010 (or even the RDR-HX910)? How do you find the performance of the box, in particular during "startup" or power on period?

Well, i've recently bought the RDR-HX1010, and have noticed I've to wait "quite long" - sometimes as long as 2-3 minutes, upon powering up the machine before I can do anything. Everytime the box powers up, it goes into a "recovery" mode, then "power off", before I can press the power button and turn it on again. I'm worndering if this is normal for the box? Does anyone have similar encounters?

Any insights into this would be greatful. Thanks.

yes it is pretty normal as it needs to boot up. that's why i just leave it on "ON" and instead of "STANDBY".

i have RDR-HX900 which is great! I like the HX1010 as it has HDMI, but i already got myself an MCE 2005 PC (which isn't as great/easy compared to Sony's but it is more than just a HDD/DVD recorder)

I recommended HX910 or HX1010 to anyone who wants a HDD/DVD recorder, though if you have Sky, you might want to wait for MySky.

The sad thing with Sony's HDD/DVD recorder is, you cannot preset the recording name! grrrrr

Hi chiefie:

Thanks for your reply. That's what I thought too, but just wanted to confirm. At least I know it's not a problem with my machine.

Yes, the HX1010 is great - I've hooked up to Sky via SCART, and it looks good. Recorded a couple of proggies with it. i've even tried recording a 2-hour movie using HQ+ setting onto HDD, and it took up about 13GB, then I dubbed the movie onot a 4.7GB DVD+RW, allo it to auto-encode recise onto DVD+RW. Works fine.

Yes, I think the setting of recording name can be a nuisance, but hey, it's not a problem for me really. At least not yet!

Cheers!

nah. the unit is great! shame the title naming can only be done after recording though :-(

anyhow, you mentioned you use SKY's Scart and the HDD/DVD recorder's SCART. how do you set it up? using Scart 1 (tv) or Scart 3 (cable)?

And does the sky decoder wakes up the recorder or something? I am not fully understanding the benefit of SCART when used together with SCART devices. and I don't have scart devices either.

My interpretation of SCART on HDD/DVD recorder and with SKY is that it sync details together? one wakes the other unit up for whatever tasks/operations? Is this so? I sort of know when using SCART 1 (TV) with TV, it wakes up TV and allow you to do synchro-rec or something like that.

Could you please give a review on using HDD/DVD SCART connection with SKy please? :-)

cheers.

Well, yes the unit is great basically - really enjoying it!

Anyway, for SCART, I'm no expert, and got it working thru trial-and-error really!

For connection to Sky, I've connected it to Line-3 on the HX1010, using a SCART to SCART cable I bought from DSe. Now, I didn't realise SCART could possible do the sync-recording thingy, and have never used it really! I usually manually program the recording time on the recorder, and book my programs on Sky separately, and just leave it! Come the time, recording starts (from timer recording), and Sky switches to the correct program.

Never used the sync recording function before tho... Sorry! ):

i suppose with the SKY box it's not as easy for SCART. but I thought SCART on TV can be useful for changing recording channels i think.. not sure...

the technique you use is the same as what i do before i got MCE 2005 too. set the TCL to right channel, and use GCODE from TV Guide for programming. much easier! hehehe.

Hi,

I am thinking to buy this one, since everyone seems to be pretty happy with it.

Is there a way to make this model "regionfree" ?

Regards,
Thom

Hi twillem:

Not sure which region you're from, but here in New Zealand the model sold is already region free. I've tried it - play DVDs from Region 1-6, even RCE encoded Region 1.

Cheers!

wlgspotter? Is it? do you know since when this was made region-free?

I haven't tried with my RDR-HX900 because i kept thinking that it is R-4, as it is saying in the backpanel...

Not sure when - I've actually asked/enquired at the Sony Style shop in Wellington, and they sales person confirmed it's region free, that's why I bought it.

But yes, I've tried mine and it works.

by the way, anyone in NZ who wants to get Sony's DVD/HDD recorder, get it now, as you will be rewarded with 50 blank DVD+R too...
