With the freeview built is it possible to any hard drive recorder for pause/rewind live TV , record one channel watch another feature?

Ha ha ha. I'm quite convinced that buying a TV is the most complex decision a consumer has to make - bar none!. And the manufacturers reckon they are doing us consumers a favour.

Lissie you've opened up another can of worms thats bound to create another 5 pages of advice. Last time I looked (which was addmitidly a couple of months ago) the short answer for you is "no".

I'd second that, I bought a Panny LCD with a gloss surround and it's the only thing I hate about the TV, can be very distracting

My old CRT was silver because that is all there was at the time.

simple solution, matt black spraypaint. Stuck like crap to a blanket to the existing silver paint on it. Problem solved. Shows fingerprints too well tho.

The power use thing is such a non issue. The simple fact is that the average owner of a panel TV also owns atleast 1 if not a a pile of computers, and if they use a latemodel gaming video card this generally requires a powerstation powersupply to drive the thing. Then if they live in a house with modern lighting and other powered devices like underfloor heating elements also require large amounts of power.

The actual amount of time a typical TV is on and power used is usually small compared to the typical house hold power used.

Also a small but important thing about Plasma vurse LCD debate, Plasmas vary the amount of power they use depending on luminance level being driven. LCD based tvs, including LEDD/LCD tv's use a pretty much flat rate of power.
If you are still worried about how much power a tv uses, calibration helps.
A calibrated Plasma will use typically 10% less power, simply because it will be not driven as hard, will also last longer aswell.
A calibrated LCD will use 4% less power calibrated.

Then turning them all off when you aren't watching them saves considerable amounts of power, but then how many people actually turn off lights in rooms with no one in them, or leave computers running with noone using them and so on and so on.

The green thinking people should read an interesting study reported in a recent New Scientist about "green people".

Everyone has taken the power question ENTIRELY OUT OF CONTEXT!!! (Well done)

I asked the question out of mere curiosity - nothing more, nothing less. I never mentioned that it was anything to do with cost, or greenness. But everyone made assumptions that I must be coming from one of those directions.

All I commented was about everyone relating power use between LCD and Plasma, but I never see people relating it to CRT. Is was curios. That was it.

Sorry to the Op for taking this OT.

Plasma is less for a 42" than my old 36" CRT. Why do they get tarred with high power usage?

Plasmas use 'about' twice as much as LCD's but it's pretty hard to compare because you really need to be able to get a similar sized unit of each type to make a valid comparison (which is why it's hard to include something like a no longer available CRT).

And then you'll find that 'Brand x' is more efficient than 'Brand y', etc... so ultimately you can only use subjective values.
