i just got a new sony bravia 46" lcd and a sony DAVDZ610 DVD Home Theatre System.
Ive got a digital optical cable running from the surround sound to the tv and im hardly getting any sound coming from the speakers at the back compared to when i have a red white to red white cable hooked up.
any idea on how i can get more sound coming from the back speakers?

What source are you playing from - the TV?
If TV what channel? Is the sound problem on all channels?
Where was the red and white cable (presume RCA stereo) connected to?

Have you considered that the TV shows you're watching may not be recorded in 5.1 surround sound?

Only TV3 currently broadcast in 5.1 and then only certain shows have 5.1 tracks. TVNZ is still broadcasting stereo with Dolby II type surround sound affects.

In a box home theatre systems will generally have pro logic 2 which will split a 2 channel input (rcas usually) into 5 channels this is why u heard the sound equally in each speaker. True 5.1 (digital/Optical) the rear speakers will kick in when required. and as 1 of the others said only a few things are broadcast in true 5.1. This was actually designed for sky broadcast movies.  Ill be honest running your optical out from your tv into ur hm theatre is still probably the best way, even tho im a bit lazy and still run a 2 channel rca into my amp hehehehe
