hey guys,
my first posting ever. i was told this probably is the best place to look for answers close to home.
i have an MCE machine and 42" Sony LCD TV to go with it. I also have xbox 360 on me, all of which require me to carry 3 remotes +1 for my home theater system. i was recently advised to look into the Logitech Harmony series of remotes to consolidate it. i did not pay heed to it till recently as during moving stuff around the house i tripped over the cable for the XP MCE receiver, sending it flying through the air & into the wall rendering it useless.
now the problem is not that i cant get a new remote. I can go out any buy a new remote but now that i have to buy a remote i was thinking of getting me the Logitech remote instead to make it work with all the devices. but the problem is that i will need a new receiver for the remote as the package does not include a receiver. is there an alternate receiver only device compatible with the MCE and this Harmony device that i could use. i tried emailing the guys at Logitech but havent heard from them in 2 weeks now.
so this is my call for help.any advice? or any other place i can try looking?

You don't say what MCE remove and receiver you have but if it's the one that Microsoft supply then there are several on Trademe you can purchase. You will get another remote though in the package. I doubt if Logitech can help you since while they sell the Harmony remotes and can provide the codes for any number of devices, they don't sell the receivers

i believe the only microsoft mce remote is only compatible with the microsoft ehome infrared receiver.  i'd suggest opening up the receiver though and checking the connections.  mine was very flimsy and i was getting signal cutouts for a while.  when i opened it up i noticed that the cabling was a bit substandard in its joins so i resoldered.  working perfectly now.

there are plenty of other remote/receivers out there but the majority come as part of a package when you buy a htpc case (ie silverstone lc10m).  these often come with their own brand of media center software but are also compatible with the windows xp mce 2005 version.  there are always remote/receivers on trademe and its probably your best bet.  also try and figure out how to use the infrared extenders that come with the remote.  they will allow you to control things like set top box and tv as well as the htpc.  you can also program the tv power button on the ms mce remote and the channel up/down buttons to control the tv on/off, channel up/down if you want to.  i use the mce remote to turn on my projector and control my computer.  handier than having one control just to turn on/off the projector, and one to control the mce.
