I have a Samsung LA55C650 and a Onkyo SR-508, connected via HDMI. Is there any way to get the tv audio back to the receiver using the hdmi cable I have? I think "audio return" is meant to do it, but I have no idea how to set it up.

I rarely watch TV so it's not worth buying an optical cable, but if it's just configuration then great.

For you to be able to do it via the single HDMI cable the TV and receiver need to be HDMI v1.4.
Otherwise the optical cable is your only option.

The receiver is HDMI 1.4. I don't know if the TV is or not and google can't easily tell me, and it's not in the manual. Anyone know?

the HDMI socket on the back of the TV and the Receiver will have "ARC" written next to it if they support Audio Return.

No, your TV does not do HDMI 1.4. The 'C' in the product name denotes a 2010 model, which has not got v1.4.

I have the LA40B650 and I just use an optical cable from the TV to my Onkyo amp. Works nicely when using the built in media player/you tube.

From memory, the settings are already set to output audio via the optical cable, so just plug and play.

Thanks JJ, I might grab an optical cable if I ever see one cheap. I use TV so rarely it's not worth adding to the rats nest back there now.
