Hi all,

I'm thinking about getting an appletv as a media extender and run xbmc on it. I'm just trying to figure out a way to get it to talk to a monitor which has only got a dvi input. I'm guesting that the video will work fine with the right connector but the question is how to get the audio. Does the hdmi output have an analog audio channel that can be split out? If not I guess my options are to use the digital audio output or use some kind of adapter to separate the hdmi signal.

A HDMI to DVI adapter will sort out your video - so that's all good.
I'd take the audio out of the optical port via a Toslink (optical cable) and plug it into an external DAC. The DAC will convert it to dual RCA's... perfect to plug into an amp etc.
Or, you could just run an optical out of the ATV2 and plug that into an amp with an optical port.

A friend got one of these http://cgi.ebay.com/Digital-Optical-Coaxial-Analog-RCA-Audio-Converter-/150619004106?pt=LH_DefaultDo... to do the job of apple tv to analog speakers, works ok for that, just dont expect audiophile sound at under $35nz landed ;)
