Probably a long shot...

Is there anything similar to the WDTV box that can play music from a Portable USB powered harddisk to a Hifi, without having to connect it to a TV in order to navigate the onscreen menu (i.e will have it's own little display for menu and folder navigation, similar to what the ipod classic had)?

Cheers,

Yeah, you just said it. WDTV box or NetGear EVA2000 Digital Entertainer Live - which I have one and don't really use it.

Or a logitech squeezebox. But that doesn't connect to a hard drive but has an LCD control and remote. Requires a PC/Mac with the squeezecenter loaded on it.

Maybe a little MP3 player or iPod classic connected to the stereo?

My setup is a little convoluted but...
Apple TV 2, jail broken with XBMC loaded onto it.
Hard drive connected via USB to my router.
I can effectively use my Apple TV 2 as a headless server, by utilising the XBMC for iPhone or iPad app.
Works brilliantly for my FLAC library, no PC needs to be turned on, album art is there etc etc.
Setup was $170 for the ATV2, $100'ish for a 1TB drive, my router...

The downside was the setup involved in hacking the ATV2, learning how to setup my music database etc.
Works well :-)

Many Thanks for the replies guys.

I might settle with using my Nokia xpressmusic phone for now and getting a bigger SD card and a Headphone jack / RCA adapter for it.

Cheers,
