Well, I think it's a challenge with analogue inputs, anyway.

So I've got a new(ish) Panasonic TH-P50V20Z.  Snagged it back when DSE and everyone else were doing ridiculous pricing on them, and have been pretty happy with it - just removed my older Samsung plasma, plugged in the HDMI, and never looked back.

...until today, when I tried to watch for the first time an older input - a component DVD player.  Nothing but a black screen.  Inputs are going through a Sony DA5200ES receiver that's set to upscale to 1080p.

Put the Samsung back in - seems to work fine.  So it's not the source, or the upscaling, but something to do with maybe the Panasonic not knowing what's coming over the HDMI cable.

Things I've tried:
1. Using component output; same problem, black screen (actually, worse - I can't get any image from digital sources either);
2. Using the monitor port on the receiver - component, S-Video, and composite.  Component and S-Video produce no image, composite produces an image until you try an enter the receiver's menu (at which point, black screen).  <- This scenario has no upscaling on through the monitor port.

I'm at my wit's end about what could be going on here.  It seems odd that the TV just won't work with analogue inputs because it's got a bunch of them on the back.

Thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks :)

Sounds like a handshaking/EDID issue between the receiver and the TV.

Panasonics are extremely fussy. If the TV decides that the signal is non-compliant for whatever reason, it locks down. The Samsungs are far more forgiving.

Observe the onscreen display popups in the top lefthand corner and report back what you see. I'm guessing its showing 480p and then blank instead of moving on to saying 1080p/60Hz etc.

It pops up and says "HDMI 1 1080p/50Hz" (I think) before going blank and then saying "HDMI 1."

I should have mentioned -  if I plug in one of the inputs directly it seems to work.  So, it's something about the output of the Sony to the Panasonic.

Is this one of those things only fixable with a bottle of Jack and a shotgun?

Most likely. Its infuriating. I had an android tablet with HDMI out and it worked flawlessly with my folks 4 year old 32" Samsung LCD. My 2009 Panasonic plasma was having none of it...

The things I'd try would be to disable vierra connect and a different hdmi cable. Also, if there is newer firmware for your AVR, then it might be worth updating it.

I'm starting to wonder if my receiver actually IS flaky.

Tried monkeying around with it again, and sure enough I can get the analogue outs on the Samsung as I always could.

What's missing?  The on screen menus no longer work.  Click those on and bam - no signal.  The Samsung is helpful enough to say that - it's just not seeing anything on the cable.

Tried about 40 cables, my lounge is a ruin of wires ;)

I'm off to the store to buy a fire axe.
