Hi guys, maybe this should be in the linux forum but it seems more media related than linux.
I just set up a media server using Ubuntu, now I am looking for the best UPnP server software. I have been looking at Mediatomb but am interested to see what others recommend.

Take a look at minidlna which is up on sourceforge. It works with most TVs and allows my Samsung to fast forward through MKV files.

Generally known online as OpenMedia, now working for Red Hat New Zealand as a Solution Architect for all things Linux, Virtual and of course Cloud. Still playing with MythTV and digital media on the side.

Two that I use: PS3 Media Server and Serviio on Windows - but they have Linux versions.

Thanks for your replies, PS3 media server looks promising and easy to use. Has anyone used it with xbox 360? it says it has basic support but not sure what that means?

I know PS3 Media Server works fine both with my PS3 and also directly from my Samsung TV over the network. I guess XBox 360 should be ok. It's free, give it a go :)

I have PS3 Media Server, but haven't got that working on the Xbox 360 yet. I use it on the Sony BDP-S370.

I use Serviio with the Xbox 360. The problem that I see with the 360's DLNA support is that it doesn't support many file types natively (via DLNA or USB), therefore alot of files will need to be converted beforehand, or transcoded at playback by the DLNA server - requiring a powerful PC.

@grolshie does your xbox see the server ok? Most of my media is already in a format that the xbox can play so shouldn't be to much of an issue if it can see and access the server okay.

It sees Serviio. I am trying to figure out why the Xbox 360 doesn't see PS3 Media Server. PS3MS has detected the Xbox, but the Xbox still shows Serviio in the list - even with the Serviio service stopped.

Update: downloaded the latest version (1.40.0 Beta 2) of PS3 Media Server. It shows up. My previous version was a custom build which might have been the problem.
