Kia ora guys,

Just briefly saying hello. I'm Dutch guy currently based in the UK (near London). My wife is kiwi and it's likely we will move to NZ in 2014/2015.
I'll mostly be looking for advice and reading up on facilities such as broadband and so forth on this website. I have been a power-user of a tech site in my native country for nearly 15 years now and am into most things IT/AV related... I'm looking forward to hang out here

PS if any of you are Dutch residing in NZ or know anybody with ties to "old zealand" don't hesitate to get in touch - I also run a website for Dutch folks residing abroad

Welcome ScuL, Geekzone is a great place to look for good information about broadband and tech in NZ.

I am norwegian with a Kiwi wife, and we just moved to New Zealand together. I have had lots of good help here on Geekzone and would be happy to share my experiences with you.

For broadband I have gone with Snap, which seems to be one of the top companies for broadband here in NZ - they have amazing support (I have experience from two installs so far and have been very happy so far).

Hei, kjempefint :) I speak some Norwegian too

I won't have to make any permanent decisions until 1.5 years from now but thought I might as well start investigating :)
When I moved to the UK I specifically looked for houses that fell within the catchment area of Virgin (which currently is the UK's fastest residential internet cable provider) :D

My wife was born & bred in Papatoetoe (Auckland) before it became as rough as it is nowadays (apparently)
Most of her family and friends now all reside in the North Shore so we're going to attempt to squeeze in there although the house prices are already giving me sweaty nights
It's relevant for both of us to be close to the city because of the nature of our jobs (and I should be frequenting AKL airport a dozen of times a year I reckon)

Well you've come to the right place because geekzone is the best general tech forum in NZ imo

Some others worth checking out:

Gpforums has a ok tech section, I would avoid the most of the of the sections though, too many trolls...

TrueNet for ISP performance monitoring, not gospel but a reasonable indicator of performance

The North Shore has plenty of Dutch folk about. Although the Shore is really the wrong side of Auckland to be convenient to Auckland Airport. depending where, a taxi from the shore can cost upwards of NZ$150 or more to the airport, one way.

The shore is nice tho (I used to live in Mairangi Bay before I moved to Melbourne). Peak traffic to the CBD is pretty bad, but if you can use the Northern Express bus way, it's pretty painless to get in and out of the CBD.

Also, Albany has fibre right now if that is important to you.

Awesome that's good to hear.

I'm aware that the location isn't that close to the airport (you still have to cross the bay) but I prefer a shorter commute + nicer living area than being close when having to get to the airport once or twice a month. For a living I'm an international sales & marketing manager (IT/AV products) and I'm hoping to find a similar role in NZ for a company that intends for me to represent their products and attend worldwide industry events and do sales roadshows and such.

Being Dutch I've actually considered cycling + catching a ferry but all of this depends on where we end up exactly and where the company would be based. If the distance is more than 10-15k's to get to the waterfront it would defeat the purpose :)

From what I can see on the UFB maps the vast majority of the Shore should be hooked up by 2015 so we should be good to go
