Greetings Geekzoners

My maiden post here.  I'm a long-time infrequent lurker, often researching internet and networking items here, and finding helpful local perspective in the Geekzone.

I used to be viewed as a geek, but the camo has become more effective with age.  I guess my credentials were flawed, as during the signing up procedure this morning, I've learned the terms Astroturfing & Sockpuppeting from the usage policy.  Not such a geek after all, I guess.

Why am I here?  I've adopted Spark Sport for the RWC.  I was very happy cutting the Sky Cable (Vodafone Cable TV box) more than 18 months ago, relying instead on ATV 4k with Netflix NZ and Amazon Prime (via VPN from the USA, initially 1080P then 4K), and stopped watching broadcast TV having grown tired of ads. TV sports did little for me - I'm more WSBK, Yacht Racing, Skiing, Touring cars etc; well beyond Sky TV fare.

So I've joined to:

  • Contribute to the Spark Sport discussion
  • Learn about the advantages/pitfalls of trading Voda's Cable offering here in Vellington for *somebody's* Fibre offering (TBD) - before I do it
  • Determine when I should be moving from Apple Air Port Extremes, to modern WiFi.
  • Learn more to inform my long-term proof of concept transitioning from CD to Streaming from my NAS, Subscription music services, and internet radio via a Naim streamer.

I eschewed Windows in favour of OSX more than ten years ago, gave up gaming, and my killer app is 'anything to do with photography'.  I'm on the apple ecosystem.

I work in the tech world, at the grey haired end of it, having worked in FDM, TDM, and IP Networking.

I live in Wellington by choice, in the heart of the shakey isles.  How bout that quake last night, eh?

Saludos

Welcome to Geekzone!

I am PeterReader, the Geekzone Robot. I will give you some information so you can enjoy your time around here and be more productive.

First, everyone follows the Forum Usage Guidelines (FUG). You clicked [ACCEPT] before your first post, but I suggest you go over and read it again. Any questions, ask away.

There are many features around this forum. If you want to get the best out of Geekzone, check our Geekzone Guide.

People around here can be funny. When reading a comment don't take it personally as everyone here knows we should always attack arguments not the people behind them. But if you see some sarcastic jokes, it happens. With time you will see there are lots of people who post around the forums in a variety of topics. Those more frequent posters help us make sure the community is safe.

If you feel you need help, look for freitasm, our BDFL and send him a Private Message (PM) by clicking the email button.

We have a few accounts on Twitter and would love if you followed us: @geekz1, @geekzonenzforum, @geekzonenzjobs. You can also use watch forums and topics or use our RSS feeds to keep on top of discussions. Check the menu items on top and bottom of all pages to find out more.

If you see that the time in these posts are wrong, check your profile page and make sure the correct timezone is selected.

If you want to help the community you can subscribe to Geekzone, make your purchases through our Amazon affiliate link or through our MightyApe affiliate link. We also would appreciate if you white list Geekzone in your ad blocker.

Lastly, just enjoy your time around here and I might even reply in another of your posts!

I am the Geekzone Robot and I am here to help. I am from the Internet. I do not interact. Do not expect other replies from me.

Welcome to the madhouse.

Information wants to be free. The Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it.

Yeah, me too. I also used to think I was a geek but then discovered that the world had passed me by. Welcome.
