I dragged an old laptop out of retirement to qualify for the Windows 8 upgrade offer last week.

The bios battery is long dead. It is wrapped in heat shrink and has wires coming out of it going to a push connector on the mainboard. It is just a standard 2032 battery in there. It has spot welded terminals. It will be a minor pain to recreate a similar package.

Is this package a standard part? Is there anywhere in Auckland City I can walk in be guaranteed to pick one up?

I'm guessing he's after something along the lines of this

These's are fairly easy to solder / re heat shrink but you can also pick them up on ebay http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=Laptop+Bios+Battery&_sacat=0&_from=R40

Those jaycar batteries look like a good start on the problem. I did more googling and it looks like the ones with the lead and plug are a common part for laptops. In the meantime I could not resist the sellotape and it is doing the job for now.
