Ragnor: Because old versions of things are phased out and not sold with new hardware.
Yes but Windows 7 is hardly old is it?

Yes, it is. It's not viable in most cases for the retailers to stock separate quantities of the same device, with different OSes, and it equally isn't that viable for manufacturers to do so in many cases. There are options for you to downgrade to Win7 if you so wish (some manufacturers support this as part of your included OEM license), so you're not being *forced* to use Win8. But they are providing the current-version OS out of the box because that is the logical thing to do, and provides the best support options.

BazNZ: I never bought Windows Vista!!!! and I will not buy Windows 8 ever!!!! It's no wonder PC & Laptop sales % wise are so far down... when stupid vendors push junk like Microsoft's Windows 8 onto customers that don't want it! What dumb business that is....basically up the customer.... take it or leave it?

Have you actually given Windows 8 a serious try?

But why would you want to?

For the many, many, many areas it's vastly superior to Windows7 in?

People trash Windows 8 because they miss the start button, the reality is undernear the UI it's Windows7 on steroids with massive improvements particularly around startup of portable devices.

"startup of portable devices."

My windows 7 notebook is usually just on standby mode so it starts up immediately. On the odd occasion I reboot (usually just to install updates), the startup is sub-30 seconds.

"Windows7 on steroids"

In what way? I have a new notebook and it came with windows 8 -- I loaded windows 7 and I don't notice any performance differences. File copy speeds in win 8 are supposed to be a bit faster but I have an SSD so really it is fast enough on win7.   And, I guess you can use teracopy but I never bothered.

I didn't want to get into a win7 vs win8 debate but here we are ha ha. This is my final post on the matter (in this thread at least) .

I still wonder why they removed aero transparency on the windows, as that is a downgrade to me. Aero was in the beta releases of 8 and looks far more modern, and allows you to see underneath. Apple have basically just added aero to IOS 7. Windows 8.1 is not bad, but I still use windows 7 on my production machine as most of windows 8 is designed for touch screen, and the desktop part has been dumbed down, and also some hardware (ironically older microsoft hardware) I have has compatibility problems with 8. Also the transition between metro and desktop is jarring and clumsey, which some settings on metro only accessible via the desktop mode. I think there is a reason why apple hasn't gone down this track with their computers which are used for creation purposes.

I have, and I also won't have it. On a non-touch screen such as a desktop the interface is beyond bad - it's truly execrable. Fortunately, I will shortly in the market for a desktop not a laptop, and the outfit that usually builds my machines for me will happily build with Win7 not Win8. Otherwise I would be looking at Linux or a mac.

I love windows 7 and I will skip windows 8 as well although 8.1 should be fine...

Just a thought - its like going into a Holden dealer and asking for last years model brand new. They just wont do it... or asking for this years model with last years engine...

O.K guys...I have taken everything said on board. Thanks! So installing Start 8 will turn a Windows 8 machine into a Windows 7 interface...easily giving me access to all my familier desktop shortcuts to my favourite Programs, Photos, Videos & Music folders? If so...do you rate this Laptop for $1500?...

Baz, great that you are open to new ideas. I have Win8 here along with Win7 and Win8.1. I find that I pin my most used programs on the desktop and don't spend that much time in the Metro screen. Win8 has some great performance improvements under the hood.

I see that you found that it is on special this weekend at PB Tech. I have been comparing a bunch for a mate and the DV7 gives some great bang for the buck particularly at PB Techs price this weekend.

Cheers, Matt.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Your onto Matt! $1487 to be exact! I want this for multimedia...like HD music videos through various sound systems. A mobile DJ unit basically for party's! I doubt I could get anything better for the price with those specs?...could I?

That price is pretty keen. The Dell 15R and 17R Special Editions are equivalent spec and price when they are on a good special.

Replace the stock 5400rpm hard drive for an ssd.
I'm currently using Windows 8.1 Preview on a Samsung 840 250gb ssd and I can never go back to a spinning hard drive.
