I now you said 15" but have you thought about a 13" MacBook Air?

Surface pro 3

deal here
https://shop.jbhifi.co.nz/computers-laptops/tablets/microsoft-surface-pro-3-i5-128gb-tablet/81330

Add another $150 - $200 for they keyboard (if you sweet talk them they can knock the price down from $200).

Not as big as a 15" but the screen is good and very portable.

I'll never buy a laptop again, I'm sorry I bought my last one a few years ago. Too big to lug around, too underpowered for what they cost and too clunky form-factor wise to make a good desktop substitute which is where mine is parked now, hooked up to an external monitor and keyboard and wireless mouse.

I'm about to switch from tablet plus laptop to a Surface varient I think. One ring to rule...oh, erm, one device to do it all.

I'm just having trouble weaning my brain from my iPad, which is such a terrific tablet within its limitations. I'm still worried a Surface won't be as good of a user experience as a tablet but I really do need a portable Windows machine. Or rather, I find it very inconvenient not to have one and not having one is sometimes complicating tasks I need to do.

Are you sure you want a laptop?

I have a Hewlett Packard Pavilion which I got especially for video editing that's pretty nice. I'm a Mac user normally, but the editing programme I prefer is Windows, and I like to have a dedicated machine for it. I don't think my specific model is for sale any more, but I remember I got it for around $1400 on sale and it has a 15.6" screen, i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, which I upgraded to 16GB quite cheaply, a 750GB fusion drive, and a dedicated 2GB Radeon graphics card.

Looking on PB Tech's site, there's a very similar model to my HP: http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=NBKHNB2499305&name=HP-Pavilion-15-n214tx-Notebook-15.6-Intel-i7-4500U

This Acer also looks nice: http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=NBKACN55736&name=Acer-Aspire-V5-573-Notebook-15.6-Ultrabook-i7-4500

And though it's out of stock, if you could get this HP Envy, it'd be very nice indeed: http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=NBKHNB2651463&name=HP-Envy-15-k021TX-Entertainment-Notebook-15.6-Inte It would handle almost anything you want to throw at it.

For what you want to do you could get away with a lower spec, and probably pick up something quite adequate in the sub $1000 range, but that few extra hundred dollars really gets you a lot more in terms of power and future-proof-ness.
