Keen to hear your experience with the SP4 so far. What are the major pros and cons for what you need it for?

And, battery life?

I like it, my idea was to replace my aging desktop but now I need new monitors to go with it haha. Its super portable and makes reading really easy, sitting on the couch in portrait mode you can see the whole page without scrolling. Windows Hello is cool but you need to change sleep into hibernate as there is a bug where Windows Hello wont let your device sleep properly. The tablet gets really hot and uses up all the battery.

This is my first 4k screen and I really like it. Sharp and clear

Battery life is very dependent on what I'm doing. If I'm just reading a PDF then battery life is 6ish hours, but if I'm using chrome it will only be 3ish but apparently  chrome is notorious for using battery. Once you can get a free ad blocker for Edge I will probably move over.

Cons,

Sometimes touchpad on the cover will stop responding and can only be fixed by a reboot. Im sure this will be fixed by a patch eventually.

Otherwise its a good device.

Thanks Decal.

Have you run across any issues with legacy software and scaling issues?

I hear that there is a new firmware out this week that apparently resolves the sleep to wake issue.

all legacy software will have scaling issues as they are not DPI aware.

Its not as bad as you might think though.  Try to match the res/dpi between Surface Pro 4 and external monitors.

Its not even legacy software that doesn't have the support haha. For example the battle net launcher is tiny due to it not supporting high res screens yet.

Just received:

Microsoft Corp. announced today the retail availability of Surface Book throughout New Zealand.

Customers can purchase Surface Book starting at an estimated retail price of $2,749 by visiting www.microsoftstore.co.nz, or visiting retailers Noel Leeming, Harvey Norman, or JB Hi Fi. Commercial customers should talk to their authorised commercial resellers.

“Surface Book is the ultimate laptop, continuing Surface’s tradition of breaking barriers and pioneering new device categories,” said Carol Glidden, Windows & Surface Business Group Lead for Microsoft New Zealand.

“Designed for people who need maximum performance—people doing photo and video editing or engineers and architects rendering 3D models and schematics—Surface Book harnesses the power of a full desktop workstation in a sleek device that is among the fastest 13-inch laptops ever made.”

Surface Book is a powerful, high-performance laptop with incredibly accurate and responsive pen and touch support. Surface Book combines the impressive power of 6th Generation Intel® Core™ i5 and Core™ i7 processors with up to 12 hours of battery life.

The 13.5-inch optically bonded PixelSense Display delivers a high-contrast 267 dpi display with improved latency and parallax, making it not just beautiful to look at but natural and fluid to write on. The screen also detaches, so it can be used like a clipboard to sketch, take notes and benefit from Windows programs like Microsoft Edge.

An optional discrete GPU allows Surface Book to harness the full power of hardware-accelerated graphics for seamless video editing and fast rendering. And Surface Book comes with the redesigned Surface Pen, packing 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity, that lets you write, draw and mark documents with precision ink on one end and an eraser on the other.

Quite tempting with that type cover thrown in. Anyone with a Surface Pro 3/4 that isn't convinced they made the right choice? Go on, be honest! ;-)

If the damn pen worked it would be brilliant. I can put up with the software glitches. I would also prefer it not have light leakage-none of my Apple products ever did. I love windows hello and the pen input. Writing (as I am doing here) instead of an on-screen keyboard in tablet mode is brilliant! IF the damn pen would just keep working!By the way SP4 owners, the new firmware update as of today seems to fix the wifi issue and it seems we can reverse the regedit workaround judging by my limited testing.

Thanks for the feedback! Not really issues I'd expect for something at that price point, but it does happen. Other options in the (similar) price range are slightly bulkier and I guess aren't quite as feature-rich. Maybe it's worth waiting to see if the bugs are ironed out first. Hmm..

As one who paid out for the cover from NL I am miffed to be down a couple of hundred bucks...!

My two gripes of note are

1) The screen is WAY too reflective. I was trying to work outside and I simply could not do it - it was like looking into a mirror. All I could see was me. There seems to be no Anti Reflective coating at all.

2) Tethering with my iPhone is very hit and miss and it ought not to be.

I suggest buying a matte screen protector to reduce glare. Plenty available on eBay.

Really enjoying the SP4 - but not a user of the pen (yet). SP4 keyboard is a big improvement over the SP3.

Was keen on the Surface book, but went with the SP4 last year as was available at the time. Now I've had a play with the Surface book, I'm happy I went for the SP4 as the surface book is too bulky and heavy for my likes.
