I got back from hols today and switched it on and the sound is now really rough.  Recent events include:

1.  Transported laptop to Waiheke Island and back - I was pretty careful not to knock it about
2.  Last night Windows 10 did an update overnight - not sure what was updated but the window banners are now green which they weren't before.

Any thoughts on how I can get my sound quality back?

What media are you playing?
What are you using (app) to play it?

How is the quality "worse"?

Using Youtube.  It sounds similar to when you have the sound up  loud using a really low spec speaker - fuzzy base.

Does it do it on any other sources?  For example have you tried playing an mp3 or movie? How do the MS sound effects sound?

See if there are sound card drivers you can roll back.

My HP has this horrible "Beats Audio" on it, which is basically some software EQ in the drivers to deal with the tiny speakers. If I use other drivers then it sounds significantly worse. Problem is the other drivers are needed so the headphone output doesnt sound aweful.

Yay, found a solution searching via Google:

  • right click on audio icon from taskbar
  • click Playback devices
  • select Speakers/HP
  • click Properties
  • go to enhancements tab
  • click disable all sound effects
  • click Apply, click Ok.

Worked!  I think this was a result of the Windows 10 upgrade that happened overnight.

It wouldn't be the first time. I work for a support company for a few large corps, and sweet Jesus the amount of issues we're having with Windows and updates are staggering.

One favorite we had was just last month (just the best timing before everyone went on holiday) where Windows pumped out an update which put outlook into safe mode every time you started it. Only way to disable it was to manually uninstall the upgrade! (We tried pulling it from the WSUS but it didn't reflect the changes fast enough, so had to remote on to 40+ machines manually..)

I don't know what knobs control updates at that place but their quality control is sorely lacking.
