I only ever by cheap business laptops for people who do very little other than email and Facebook but a friend has asked me to recommend something to edit GoPro videos.

His budget is around $1000 and I was thinking of this Dell Inspiron 15

I like Dell's, it's new and the same price as anything he has found on TM and I would expect it to handle everything he needs to do being quad-core, 16GB with both ssd and hdd.

He doesn't want a touchscreen, doesn't need portability (but would like >4 hours battery life) and doesn't need a dvd drive.

Anyone better than me have any thoughts ?

You need to fix your link. First it links to Geekzone, when that's fixed it links to a "this page does not exist".

Dell is a good choice, would you like a quote for that model?

Do you work for Dell ?

Either way if you think you can get it for cheaper and still provide the usual warranty stuff. It will be my friend buying it I don't want to be stuck in the middle if something goes wrong ;)

Dell NZ Partner, just realized this is not an NZ purchase, so cant help :( It's a little more effort but a local Dell partner can usually quote for less than the list price AND can help with warranty stuff.

Haha, my day gets worse, I hadn't realised it was on the US site and not the NZ one :(

Are you still able to provide a quote based on the NZ version ?

Ok, given my schoolboy error, does anyone have any laptop ecommendations ?

I'm assuming quad-core is preferable and 8GB is absolute minimum. Obviously an SSD is required, but should we be thinking of anything else to edit GoPro videos ?

Damn, I saw the budget and then noticed the US site and assumed US sale. If its a NZ you want I will see whats possible. Any time frame on this, I will see if I can get you a price.

Nope, no rush. I've just ended up on the Dell HK site somehow after checking for other laptops starting at dell.co.nz. Not sure what I'm doing to have that happen.

I'd happily consider refurbished too if that's an option. I've been watching the dell outlet site but the XPS machines go within hours of being seen so you have to be lucky.

Budget could stretch another $200 if it's something really good and future proof.

Maybe you should make sure you're on the NZ website then post specs and price to GZ, easier than following questionable links.

The latest link looks fine, possibly overspecified. A decent i5 with 16GB of RAM and an SSD would be sufficient, this would be a bit better for rendering.

If its not for gaming then the GPU isn't needed, I have read that the GPU usage for encoding is not a major requirement. LTT recently used The Blades from Razor at CES for editing footage so a similar spec is good. I'm obvs a Dell guy so a little biased, but they do last and are well worth the money. You can feel the quality.

Nope, no gaming, just email, facebook, trademe, youtube and GoPro editing. They have an old toshiba doing it now and he says it takes forever. They just want to speed it up. I've never used a GoPro and its been years since I did any video editing hence why I'm throwing it out there.

If an i5 would do the trick then I'm happy to consider it.

I worked for Dell in the UK for 7 years, so have a soft soft for them as well ;)

GPU can be used for the encode.

Also what is the end result for the export? I have found with youtube if you have a fast upload (gig fiber) then exporting with a faster codec and a stupidly high bitrate works out quicker than trying to do multiple passes of h264 to get the size down while keeping quality. They re-encode everything in anycase so no point minimizing size of the exported file if you can push it up quicker than you can export it.
