I have a little HP Windows tablet that I bought here on GZ. I have never used it for anything but now I am about to head overseas and I wanted to take it with me. I noticed the battery was a bit low so put it on the charger. Although I left it on for a couple days, it only charged to 14%. I tried replugging and the charging indicator came on but then I couldn't get the unit to boot. Then the charging indicator started rapidly going off and on, something I have never seen before. I could not get the unit to respond at all, except once very briefly when a text message flashed up. It said the battery was extremely low. Now the unit is completely dead. Nothing causes any response at all.

I prised off the back to see what I could see and there is a lithium battery with a big notice on it that it is not removable. I know this is standard these days but I find it unacceptable that manufacturers make things with batteries that can't be replaced, especially when batteries are always a weak link.

So is this thing fixable? I'm pretty sure the problem is only the battery, though I have not previously seen one fail in quite this way. The battery isn't swollen. It looks perfectly normal. Can it be removed and replaced in spite of the notice? Can the device be repaired? It seems pretty wasteful to have to throw something like this out just because of the battery.

Are you sure it is not the charger?

I have made a little progress. I have been trying different power sources since it uses USB. I noticed before that a USB 3.0 card in the desktop seems to have a little more current capacity than the regular USB ports. I put it there and replugged it a few times and was able to get the charging symbol to come up briefly. Then I was able to boot the device. It is working right now. I dimmed the screen to reduce the load but I can monitor the charging and it says it is now at 7%. But before I couldn't get it to do anything. I can't trust it but I assume this is a battery issue. Which brings me back to my question. Is it fixable?

Tablets don’t like being charged from a computer, get the proper ac adapter and charge from that.
You want it to be at least 2A.

Usb3 only puts out about 900mA, The tablet will need 1500mA to 2A o charge properly

I appreciate the info but I was using the charger that came with the tablet. I'm pretty sure that is the original one but I will try to check it. I only switched to the USB 3 card when I started having the problems.

Edit: Maybe it isn't original. I thought it was but it says Nikon on it and it is only rated at 1 amp. I'm pretty sure this is the one I got with it but it may not be the right one.

If you have the HP Stream 7, then the manual states you need a 5v 2A charger, as has already been mentioned.

Get a better charger, that's not the proper one.

It would be an HP charger if it was the original.

I've got an HP x2 convertible thing with a microUSB charger. The charger that came with it is 5V / 3A, and it doesn't seem to charge at all using anything else.

The issue does seem to be with the charger. I got it with the tablet but it clearly isn't the original and the seller did inform me of that, but it was awhile ago and I had forgotten. What seems to have happened is that the battery was completely drained for some reason and the charger was unable to get it 'started' again. When I plugged the tablet into the USB 3.0 port, it started charging and eventually charged up to 98%. It seems to be holding a charge and working normally now. My guess is that the charger I have works for topping it up, but not if it is completely flat. I will look for a better one while away. Thanks again to everyone for the suggestions. I guess my tablet isn't dead yet after all.

I have a Stream 7 and it is very picky on its charging device :) Drives me up the wall when I think its charging, go out with it, and find it dead :)
