Is that photo reflective of the NZ tertiary student population? If so, it impresses me how many students appear to so easily find the money for a laptop that I, as someone in f/t employment, would find difficult to justify! Same with phones - I wonder what proportion have iPhones to go with the Macbooks?!

Given that, as suggested above, for many a good-quality Chromebook would be more than adequate... I guess it's an easy single item that can justify their CRCs for one year (course-related costs, the $1k component of the student loan).

Re Chromebooks - many recommend the Samsung models, which I think can be purchased from Amazon. They, or something like the Asus C302, have the advantages of touch screen and tablet mode, if those are useful features. Often storage on these can be somewhat stingy (32GB is typical), but there seem to be fewer restrictions on Android apps accessing SD card storage now.

If I was a student now, and didn't need a powerhouse laptop or apps that required Windows or Mac OS, I'd go with a Chromebook. Personally, I've found the integration of OneDrive with my Chromebook pretty damn poor, but accessing files directly via Office 365 apps has been fine.

I'm going to put my 2c here.

Sister got a MacBook Air for her studies back in 2012. I told her to go with a Microsoft Surface Pro but she didn't listen to me. I'm glad she didn't as this MacBook air is still running fast, works well and will continue to work well. Still gets around 6 hours battery and runs the latest version of MacOS.

Apple products are built to last. They're expensive, but they're also guaranteed to last through your studies. I would also recommend Chromebooks (am typing this on one now) as they just work.

My 10 year old core 2 duo laptop still runs fast, works well and continue to work well on free windows 10 upgrade. i swap out its hard drive and RAM as I wish, with one screw driver.

Battery is probably rubbish though but who knows.

I think most things last depending on how they are treated.

I think Apple products are a good option provided budget is not an issue. That is not the case here.

But enthusiasm for Apple products doesn't "guarantee" that their products will last through a three to five year degree. If Apple did provide such guarantees then there wouldn't be so many examples of New Zealanders' having to rely on our own consumer protection statutes to get our Apple products repaired. Instead, Apple have a limited warranty and relatively expensive repair costs, an important consideration when regularly using a portable device on a limited income.

FineWine, that photo is totally misleading as jonathan18 pointed out. The cost to income ratio is very different in the USA - the preponderance of "Mizzou" tops indicates the University of Missouri - where Apple products are cheaper in real terms. For everyone to be using Apple suggests a course requirement or sponsorship.

Oh Please can we move on. It was said with 'tongue in cheek'. I know a lot of students can not afford Apple anything and yes I did read the $1500 budget.

No sign of 'tongue in cheek'! Given the OP's questions, how would they know?

Funny thing is that nearly everywhere you go, the majority of uni students have Apple products.

I've commented on those links you provided.

There's no specialised computer requirements for students on the Otago University and Health Sciences website. Almost any new computer (Windows-based, Apple, Chromebook) will be adequate as the software for all students is not demanding of resources, e.g. Citrix receiver 1GB RAM. The fallback option is to use a web browser and online applications like Office365 Online.

nadz77:

He would probably prefer 15" and am looking at intel i7, 8gb, 256ssd minimum - would this be sufficient? Yes, those are high-end specs for what is needed. The smaller 13" will give better portability than a larger 15" - 4 of my family studying at uni this year prefer 12"/13".

Usage would be mainly lecture notes, assignments, and watching netflix etc - he already has a gaming desktop. So doesn't need 15" at home

... budget max $1500.

Instead of used, a new 2-in-1 (convertible) alternative is about same price but with a slower processor:
https://www.dell.com/en-nz/shop/2-in-1-laptops/inspiron-13-7000-2-in-1/spd/inspiron-13-7373-2-in-1-laptop
New $1,399 i5-8x 13" FHD 8GB 256GB flip touch 1.5kg Win10 Home

If you got a non-convertible laptop instead then prices are about $200 cheaper.

Thanks everyone for all your help - was really appreciated, and have me lots to think about.
He def didn't want an Apple (and budget not big enough anyway) or a chromebook, also wanted a 15" screen.
We've decided to go for an Hp Envy 360x - hopefully he'll be happy with it.

Make sure he knows where and how to get and install all the individual hardware firmware & software drivers etc peculiar to machine and Windows 10, most if not all should be found on the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads. Window tries to be be all things to all people so mostly have generic software & drivers.
