I wonder if someone could give me a head up or a recommendation ...

I have an HP laptop, nc6120/nx6120 1.6Ghz (512MB Originally)2GB RAM, XP Pro SP2.

For as long as I remember I always have 100% CPU, performance graph always red. Even with now 2GB RAM, it takes 20 minutes to boot up the desktop. Last night I took an experiment, turn off all of the non-essential processors. CPU still comes up to 100%. I believe most of the time System Idle should be 100% but should not slow down or freeze up the machine. In my case most of CPU time is on System Idle but the whole machine freezes up for at least 20 minutes.

Where should I look next? I mean if there is a motherboard issue or CPU seating issue .. perhaps I should send my laptop to have a service. Or just forget about it and buy another laptop.

We'll never be too old to learn, and we learn at least one new thing every day.

CPU at 100% usually indicates a software process is causing it - however you say there is nothing using the cpu when using taskmanager etc - therefore its not actually running at 100%.

It will most likely be overheating - the hotter the cpu gets the slower it will run.... go into the BIOS and see if theres any temp monitoring there and see what it says for the CPU.
