Im looking to get a laptop for myself on a bit of a tight budget of $1000

will be used mainly for internet surfing with the occasional playing MP3's and word documents...

have so far narrowed it down to either a Dell Celeron 585 2.1Ghz with 2GB ram or

HP Presario AMD 2.1Ghz with 1GB Ram

Both come with Vista home basic (yuck!) but I plan to put XP on and then maybe windows 7.

15.4" screen
160GB Harddrive
Intel Onboard graphics

So the question is which one is likely to run better overall  or does anyone know of better options that Ive missed?

hmmm well I figured since the 2GB ram is Dual channel 800Mhz, that that would be the quicker option... Now its a nice 7 day wait for it to arrive! :)
