mattyboy2: I actually bit the bullet today and got an HP Mini 311 from JB Hi fi... the dude gave me a good deal, $1100. So even though I know it may soon be obselete in January, I really wanted something for Xmas and so long as it's grunty enough to play my FreeviewHD recordings it'll do the job!

-Matt

hows the Freeview HD playback on the 311?

HP Mini 311
Lenovo IdeaPad S12

I managed to pick up the HP 311 250 GB version for $920 incl GST which I was thought was a pretty good deal. Seems pretty good so far. Screen is huge compared to the old 9" Aspire One I have.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

I'd also be keen to know how Freeview HD plays once you've had a chance to test it...

Expert Infotech. It was only at that price for a couple of days. It is back up to $1200 now. :-(

It plays Freeview HD recordings sweet! Even over my wireless g network (not n!), they play fine and i can watch them from my bedroom.

I've got Win7MC on my HTPC, then set on the 311 I set its media libraries to be the ones on the HTPC (through my Homegroup) and voila, my entire Movies collection and recorded TV is viewable.

The only thing missing is TV guide and live TV viewing - too bad you can't set this up. It's a shame cos you can view Live TV on a media extender such as an Xbox 360. It would be nice to be able to do that on the 311.

I'm in the middle of installing something at the moment but I'll update this post soon with a screenshot of CPU usage.

Edit: TV1, TV2 etc @720p play fine over my wireless g network, but TV3 stutters a bit due to network speed. TV3 plays fine when plugged in via ethernet. Perhaps a wireless n network would be fast enough to play TV3, but I don't have the hardware to find out. I shall record my TV3 shows on TV3+1 since it's lower res.

Awesome :) I can't wait to get mine, I'm waiting for the 1201N, have preordered it for $795 - $400 for my old 1005HA plus bag + mouse that I'm selling to my missus :)

Just need to find a new bag, mouse and hope it's got a 3g slot built in

Hmm, weird, why is the TV guide missing? Hope you get it running again soon and definitely keen on the CPU usage. I've got my Ion based N330 Zotac running Freeview at the mo, would be good to compare it to a Mini 311

TV Guide won't be there if there is no tuner set up.

Where have you pre-ordered the ASUS?

Yeah, as Mattv said, I don't have a TV tuner in my 311, the tuner is in my HTPC so I can't watch live TV on the laptop over the network like you can with an Xbox 360.

Yeah I really wanted to the 1201n too and that would be my first choice, but sad to say i couldn't wait.

Watching a TV3 HD recording fullscreen and the CPU hovers around 20%.

Goddamn I'd never heard of them before. Looks like a great service! http://www.shipito.com/

Anyone used it before?

What about getting stung for GST and import duty? Last time I looked it would be another 12.5% for GST and the same again for import duty = ~$940. Correct?

G.S.T - Yes you will have to pay unless you declare the customs value to be NZ$400 or less.

Duty - I don't think so if there is any duty charged in importing PC's and Laptop's from overseas if for personal use.

and shipito is a very reliable and fast mail forwarding company operating out of US.
