Over the weekend, I was browsing around at Harvey Norman, then I came across HP's Envy 15. It looks very nice and no doubt about the look/style, it's very MacBook Pro like. As the saying goes "imitation is the best form of flattery" as HP did not try anything to make it slightly different from Apple...

From the search that I can gather, for NZ market the model is HP Envy 15-1022TX which has Intel Core i7-720QM, 8GB ram, 15.6" 1920x1080, external DVD-burner with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4830 1GB.

It's screaming for my attention, even though Dell's Alienware M15x which has similar specs (I priced/configured one with 8GB ram and it has 1GB GDDR3 NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) GTX 260M; at $4,989)

Both Dell Alienware M15x and HP Envy 15 are certainly looking more attractive when you break down the features-to-dollar comparing to Apple MacBook Pro 15 Best.

Shame thing is, there's a HP Envy 15 model with BluRay drive option in US. Anyone know if it is possible to source the same bundle/package in NZ?

Looks like Noel Leeming has it listed on their website at NZ$4999 for Envy 15-1022TX.

And I found Asus's SBC-04D1S-U Blu-ray drive at NZ$387.33 on Ascent. So that could be an after-thought to buy should NZ not ever gonna get an Envy 15 BluRay bundle.

@Joker97, true, that's an interesting point.

The next suitable/come-close system specs would be Dell Studio XPS 16. But like Alienware M15x, it's slightly bulkier but with i7 820QM though... Hmmm

So far I'm very liking Envy 15.

Do note that there has been a lot of people very unhappy with the slice battery - the latches aren't strong enough to to stay on.

I think the Envy is over-priced, especially in NZ. They are selling it for AU$3200 for the 8GB model. Considering the currency, NZ is still priced over a grand at least more. You might as well go on a holiday to Aussie and buy it there and it would still be cheaper!

Anyway, have you considered the Asus G51J? It has a 260m video card with blu-ray built-in. It doesn't look sleek but sure is value for money.

Hmmm... looks like I'm not getting it now, after reading it from Gizmodo.com [http://gizmodo.com/5413076/]

Kinda what I read from other forums regarding it. :-( Also I called up HP CSR (got diverted to Acquire) and was told the only model NZ has at the moment is Envy15-1022TX, with possibility of BluRay model in NZ either in Jan/Feb... that's the same time as Apple be possibly bringing out their new MBP 6,1 and 6,2 (perhaps it'd be i7-720QM even).

Oh well...

i played with one today also at HN.
felt rather heavy and plain.
but the weird thing was that the mouse pad was very very unresponsive - is it just that one or are they all laggy?

I think the HN (Moorhouse) HP Envy 15 is not configured well... But knowing the places like HN, they never really set anything up properly...

anyhow, I've given up on HP Envy 15 as well... probably gonna spend that same amount on Apple MacBook Pro in Jan/Feb with the rumoured new Intel chips.

that's the one! HN moorhouse!
anyway, overheard the salesperson
"this one with 2GB ram is better than the one with 4GB ram because it has seperate graphics memory - the 4GB one will have memory sucked for graphics. the 2GB one is also better because you can upgrade it to 4GB later, but if you buy the one with 4GB ram that's it, if you want to upgrade you have to buy a new computer"
LOL!!!!
(there was one just adjacent with both dedicated graphics AND 4GB AND cheaper)
sorry off topic but just had to let it out before i forgot

I would go with a Asus N61JA-JX046X for the i5 and higher Mhz CPU. For the price (Just over $2K) I would then move the ram to 8GB, add the blu-ray drive and chuck in an SSD with Trim.

i5 doesn't have 4-core though. Core i7-720QM has Turbo Boost so if not all cores are being used, it will booooooost, it's like built-in overclock.

If I'm going for a super notebook, definitely will opt for i7-720QM or 830QM.
