Looking at a replacement secondhand notebook/laptop. Have found two and would like to know peoples comments etc on which would be the better buy?

First option:

Dell XPS M170, Pentium M 2Ghz, 2Gb ram, 80 Gb HDD, DVD+/-RW, 17inch LCD, Geforce 7800GTX 256mb Dedicated, Vista

Second Option:

Toshiba Tecra M5, Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 2Ghz, 4Gb Ram, 320Gb HDD, DVD Writer, 256Gb Nvidia Quadro NVS110M, 14inch LCD Win XP Pro

Both are in equally good condition, and priced around the same, around $700

without a question the core 2 duo. that is infinitely faster than a pentium M. if you're wanting to upgrade to windows 7 can be easily done. but if you have a pentium there's no upgrading possible.

if you have no qualms with the video card get the core 2 duo. it IS infinitely faster, but perhaps vista and win 7 makes use of multicores better than xp, but you have 2 cores and it's what you want.

+1 for the Toshiba.

Although it's got a smaller screen, you'll more than cope with 14", but the main other specs are much better: much faster processor, twice as much RAM, and four times as much hard-drive space (very important!).

Ended up buying this "HP NC8430, Core Duo 2.0Ghz, 15.4Inch Widescreen, 256Mb ATI Radeon X1600 Graphics, 1GBRAM, 100GB HDD, DVD+/- Writer, XP Pro" for $695

Thanks for your help guys, the Toshiba when I got to the store, didn't look nice, looked like it had a hard life.

The HP has a full 12 month warranty and have already upgraded the ram So I'm happy :)
