Am looking at getting a core i7 (720QM or above) laptop for about $2500 and stumbled upon the above

no must haves, but would strongly want
- calibrated screen for photo editing: will the TrueLife RGB option provide that?
- 7200rpm hdd: not offered. is SSD worth the $400? disadvantageous?
- lightweight: HP ENVY does that but ...
- BD Writer: not paying $600 to get it!
- reliability i guess no point dying in 13 months CGA or not: XPS reliable?

any other better deals?
i guess the Sony F-17 option may get to $2800 with a Noel Leeming 20% discount but did not happen over easter so what are the chances of that before boxing day!

joker97: photo editing, HTPC and general purpose.

Why not a desktop HTPC and a nice laptop which can be used as a laptop? (13" one).

You could get both easily for under that price.

You'll find with those spec's youll have what i like to call a lug top.

Have a think? Do you really need a mobile HTPC?

Everyone i know with a lug top (generally 15"+, big laptop) doesnt use it as a laptop because its too big and heavy.

DROOL.

? Intel? Core i7 Processor 720QM
? 8GB DDR3 1333 MHZ
? 17.3" Full HD (1920x1080)
? ATI Mobility? Radeon? HD 5870, 1G GDDR5 VRAM
? 1TB, 7200 rpm
? Blu-Ray DVD Combo

Yes. Thats a HD5870. In a laptop. More than twice as powerful as my current desktop gaming rig.

*sigh decisions decisions ...

1) yes i do need a laptop because we are on the move all the time, unlike most of you lucky fellas.

2) i've debated lugtops and laptops - in the end if i'm paying $3000 i might as well get a feature packed small lugtop instead of a core solo snail paced 13" which costs the same and comparatively retarded.

the ASUS looks mouthwatering!

but i know the screen on the XPS and Vaio F117 has RGB (full colour gamut) and that's quite important. not sure about the Asus.

i guess i might wait in hope for the Noel Leeming 20% discount ... surely the Dell will drop further in price (another hope)! ... while i research the HDMI bit

i had originally thought about a core i5, but they cost nearly $2500 and so i thought what the heck get the i7 with 2 more cores and 4 more threads!
