hi my daughter dropped her toshiba m40 laptop xp home and since it has had bsod with software fault and i brought s/hand so no xp cd but registration code on bottom like a wolly i installed my own laptops recovery cd which is vista but it runs to repair section then says bios error with system any help appreciated i am a novice in the full sense of the word!!!!!!

These sorts of things are very, very hard to diagnose on a forum. Really your best bet would be to take it to someone who has experience with laptops and can see if they can repair it.

The first thing I'd try is another hard drive, the one in it probably didn't like being dropped very much.

Also check that the RAM modules are still seated properly, that the fan still spins (a cool system is vital) and that any addon cards (such as Wifi etc) are seated properly.
BTW: By seated I mean "plugged in properly". It helps just to unplug and replug them in.

Next, go into the BIOS of the laptop (look up online how to do this) and reset everything to default.

Those are all the things I'd do if I had the laptop in front of me, past that I'd probably say "Sorry, it's passed on!" but there has to be other people out there with good experience with Toshiba repairs.

It doesn't sound like a software fault at all, but more like something broke or was dislodged with the impact. As muppet says, better to take to a repair shop for correct diagnosis.
