Our desktop unit fried today when I got home (its about 6+ years old, nasty as hell) so I convinced parents to get a new computer and mum said she wants a portable one, on the cheap. Anyone had this computer/had experience with it? We'll try it out at the store tomorrow before we get it.

is it speedy? Whats the android OS like? What version is it? and How would you update that?
Cheers in advance guys,

bought one a week or two ago

android is very useless, android 1.6 by the looks and no update is availible

win7 runs fine and for just browsing the web and checking emails would do the trick.

it has a multi gesture touchpad and led screen which is great for the price

only real con is screen size and no cdrom but that is what you sacrifice in netbook

Yeh they dont mind that, if they do need a cd, i can make an iso of that on my laptop and install it from a pendrive. Hows the battery life? 4-5 hours someone said on DSE's site. Does it handle youtube and flash games ok?

yeah thats what i do, it will have 4-5hours battery if it not being used intensively, although it is only a 3cell battery and havent had any problems with flash.i also see that it says no carrybag included on the dse website, it comes with a neoprene case.

the android operating system is only really for web browsing, it doesnt have apps, or much else for that matter. the only thing going for it is its fast bootup time and lower battery consumption.

Hey your link just goes to the dse homepage. How much are you looking to spend? Last year I got a Toshiba NB305 for 899. I have been using it for uni etc and it's working great so far.

I found the acer laptop. Similar specs to mine. I upgraded to 2GB ram and noticed a huge improvement on performance. If you can try and get them to include that.

LOL, I was only just fixing it! Oh well, let me repost:)

You may want to consider spending a wee bit more, as the Atom processor is a bit of a FAIL in terms of performance. Since you will most likely use this for a long time, might be a worthy upgrade.

It's the Acer Aspire One AO522 10.1 Netbook. Comes with AMD Fusion. Get it at JB for $499 approx as they have a 10% off sale at the moment.

Yeh parents didnt want to spend over 400bux. We got this laptop in the end and I tried the android part out, and its sooo dumb. Lol. but the windows 7 part of it is ok, wouldnt say speedy but it works fine. Setup was fast and easy and the design of it is very nice. Downside is i have to guide parents and brother how to use windows 7 since they've only used XP until now. Its so strange going from that tiny 10" screen to this giant 15" + one.

Thanks for your help. Oh btw, is there a way to update the android os to 2.2 or something? 1.6 is so old.

Just went and got the AOD522 with the 720P screen, HDMI output etc for $472.50 at Noel Leemings(quote the JB Hifi website price)!!! Very good deal

@Tardtasticx - Don't think anyones bothered to update it to 2.2 yet, as to do it it'd require a bit of modding/development/driver implementation unfortunately. Best place to check would be slatedroid or the xda forums though, to see if there are any close matches, maybe search for an Atom based tablet with Android 2.2, just make sure if you try anything, that it has a recovery mode :)
