The door knockers came round our area (Whitby, Porirua) a few weeks ago. I got caller display, call minder etc for free for 12 months which was costing me $10 a month anyway. My neighbour got a free Tivo. I feel a bit ripped off about that but what can you do! Lucky him :)

kiwipearls: Thanks for your replies guys.

Glad I am not the only one that is wary of door knockers. ?And I?combated?the JW's by putting a sign on my door saying "No Preaching" many years ago. ?I am amazed they respected that and they don't knock on my door anymore.

Might put one up saying "no Door to Door salespeople".

You want a Hawkers Notice.

Yeah not going to buy that sign...will just type up my own and stick it on the inside window with the others :D - weatherproof it that way

I had someone from Telecom phone me on Monday about "the plan I'm on" - as I was on a call on another line I asked if they could call back in an hour, haven't heard from them since.

Is this likely to be what they were calling about? They've got nothing on the website that is any better value than what I'm on with my cellphone so can't imagine what it'd be otherwise, unless it was to offer me to get in on the 4G trial...

A flatmate used to work for Telecom and as a result of whatever he was doing, we effectively got phone+internet for free. One of Slingshots barely-comprehensible callcenter people called once and he couldn't be made to understand that there was no way they could do a better deal than "Free". Pretty sure I ended up hanging up as he couldn't comprehend.

I think it is doorknocker season.

Just had people for the foundation of the blind collecting money.

I also don't donate via Doorknockers.  If I am going to donate I do it on their official websites.

Any hawker that knocks on my door (or calls my phone for that matter), simply gets a polite 'No thanks, not interested' and then door closed immediately on them.

Don't even offer them the opportunity to engage you in conversation. They can't argue with you that way.

Got a phone call with a US number a couple of days ago, asking to speak to my [wife's old name]. I passed the phone and it was someone trying to sell landline. Wife told this person she's not responsible for our accounts, and the person just hung up. Obviously some old listing scraped from somewhere because my wife's name changed seven years ago...

Hi guys,

I am aforementioned Telecom door knocker.
I stumbled upon this thread while checking out the general online sentiment towards our team.

We have a team in each major city and we are allowed to customize plans and sweeten deals.
We get access to special promotions that no other division gets, deals not available over the phone, in store or online. It may sound strange but I guess companies often make coupons and promotional codes to access special rates not available without said promotional code.
Think of us as human coupons hooking you up deals that you can't get elsewhere. Promotional Sales.
Good news is that these deals are available through me whether I knock on your door or not.
I sell to my friends regularly.

It's a great job. I love it. But then again I'm the guy who talks to you at the bus stop and ends up telling you half of my life story while you're tryna listen to your new podcast. But I'm also the guy who knocks on your door and hooks you up sweet deals. I think it's a shame that there are retards knocking on people's doors who cannot read body language and then have the audacity to argue with the person who's time and space they are impinging on.
It's like farting while hitch hiking.

And yes we ALL work for Telecom. I'm from Wellington, we're based out of the new Telecom building on Willis St. If you ever suspect a door knocker of fraudulent activities do not hesitate to call the police.

It's those dicks who make our job harder.

See you soon :)

I'll generally listen to where door knockers are from, say sorry not interested, and go inside. They don't follow because they are standing outside my gate. 30kg of Staffy Cross (who only wants to see if they have a ball but looks like she eats babies) between the gate and front door will do that...
