I just switched from Vodafone to Telecom 500GB plan. The speed to download on Torrent is just average 5KBps despite my download speed is 9MB when doing speedtest. 

The download speed is average at 1MBps for the last two years with Vodafone. 

I contacted Telecom support team and I was told that I am on the same server as before. but I was not given any advice because Telecom does not provide any support for "torrent".  

I asked Telecom do you guys actually sharp torrent traffic, the answer is NO. However, the speed for doing other things such as watching on Youtube, iTunes is very good. 

Does anyone know the reasons for this problem?

The problem here is you pretty much said to them "I get slow speeds on my illegal downloads" - No ISP will ever endorse this, it's also not normally in their interest to traffic shape.

1) Have you done the correct port forwarding to your client? - If not, you might want to get this done.
2) Are you using a new router since changing over? (see #1 for possible solution if yes)



You'll see by my example that I have a green tick in my torrent client (in this case uTorrent) which means my port forwarding is all good, as you can see my speeds are pretty good too - If I don't forward any ports it means clients can't connect to me, depending on where your downloading from / your client you'll see less seeders of which means substandard download speeds.

Instructions on forwarding your ports can be easily obtained from: http://portforward.com/ - Search your routers model and forward the required port(s) from your client, see your clients settings for the ports that are required, use something random (eg 2225-2230) as the default ports are often frowned upon by most people.

Yes, I attempted port forwarding, but the speed for downloading is increased but still considerably slow. Up from 3kbps to 12kbps (occasionally up to 22kbps but then drop back to 3 or 4 kbps)

Is this happening for ALL torrent or some of them? Perhaps it's a torrent with very few seeders, perhaps these very few seeders are on the other side of the world, perhaps these very few seeders on the other side of the world have very small Internet pipes.

Telecom doesn't shape things, and I'd say it could be for any of the reasons mentioned so far in this discussion.

Also is this YOUR router? If not, are you sure the owner is not blocking or limiting packets?

Do you realise that when you download from torrents you are automatically also uploading and this counts as well towards your monthly cap? Are you sure you haven't reached your cap yet and being throttled?

What freitasm said. Tormenting is not a good way of testing speed because it has many variabilitys outside your influence.

As you say, speed to other stuff like youtube and web browsing is good, so the most likely explanation is that you are downloading a torrent with very few seeders and that is why it is slow

It happens on all torrents, I just switched to Telecom 2 days ago and checked my usage 1GB used out of 500GB . I have three different brand modems and routers, I tried all of these three with all possible config, none can go over 20kbps.

The interesting fact I found out that I connected my PC with my mobile broadband (Telecom XT), the download speed was about 250kbps in average on the same torrent file.

The fact Telecom don't shape torrents (or any traffic) in any way only leads to two possible scenarios.

* Your router/network configuration
* Poorly seeded torrents

Thanks Talkiet, after attempting downloading the above file, everything now works perfectly. The speed at beginning was at about 600kbps, and then after 2 mins the connection is dropped. Once the connection is up on running, the speed for downloading all other torrent files are now in average 600 KBps. Do not know the exact cause, but it just magically works normally.

Sorry to keep brothering. Nothing has been changed, but now the video quality is poor. In other words, the speed of the internet connection limits the ability of providing HD/higher resolution picture quality as before. And when I streaming movies alone, it seems require longer time to buffer and movie stop from time to time very often. (Tried Apple TV, Hulu Plus and Netflix) 

I also realise that my internet connection is connected to Telecom Christchurch server. Is it correct? So there is no telecom server in Auckland?  Cheers, Benny

if you're watching youtube videos there's a little option menu in the right hand corner to change the quality of the video, depending on the video also. quality settings seem to be in the same place on most other video streaming sites i've seen.

You could try rebooting your modem?

Surely to watch Hulu Plus and Netflix you are using a VPN? If that's the case then back to the drawing board - it could be ANY THING in the world and completely outside Telecom as the VPN is not their service.

I tried reboot the modem many times, not helpful. I tried YouTube, it is the same. At the beginning, no streaming. After waiting for a while, it started. And stop from time to time.

Called Telecom support, do not know why shows my connection to Christchurch server and I asked to turn off the interleaving(up to 48 hours). Just wait and see.....
