Hi there,

I'm just wondering why my Telecom internet is so slow at the moment, basically.

Over the past couple of year or so, my internet speeds have been progressively getting lower and lower. Once upon a time, we were able to comfortably watch a HD Youtube video, and not have to stop and wait for it to buffer at all. Now, however, we can barely watch a vid on the lowest quality without stopping it and waiting for it to load. This is just an example, all internet activity has slowed down. Now I can't even hold a Skype voice call, it just cuts out (the same with other voice and video call programs, like Google Hangout).

Another thing I have noticed is that it is especially slow at night, where I might get 1.5mb/s max during the day, I am lucky to get 1 after about 6pm.

I'm sorry I don't have results from earlier in the year, but they seem to have disappeared :/

We live in a semi-rural area, about 30km out of Hamilton. I do use a wireless router, but I know for a fact that this is not the reason for the slowness. When I connect my laptop via cable I get only a ~0.10mb increase in speed. I have also tried with a non-wireless router/modem, and also on a different computer (desktop) none of which have improved the speed even slightly. I have changed operating systems, computers, DNSs, routers, cables, everything I can think of, and yet nothing I do gets me even close to what would be a decent speed, even above 2mb/s. Oh, and we are not over the 30gb data cap, we usually only use about half of that.

If anyone has any ideas on how to make my internet faster, if there is anything I can do, please post them! Or could it be a fault in the area's wiring (or my house)? We will have quite old wiring, as our Broadband was installed about 7 years ago, possibly longer. I have contacted Telecom about it, and they have said we should be getting about 16mb/s. They then sent us a free wi-fi router to see if that would help fix the problem, but it did nothing and we haven't heard from them since.

1.What modem are you using? Is it updated to the latest firmware?
2.Post your modem stats
3.Are you connected to a cabinet or exchange? Where are you located?
4.Have you done a complete isolation test (unplug all other devices from line - phone, fax, alarm and plug the modem to the first point in the house)?
5.When testing always test using a wired connection, not WiFi (yes, I read your comment about the very little improvement, but interference by cordless phones, microwave over and other devices needs to be ruled out)

The likelyhood of having wiring problems is higher than external problems in most cases - the answers to the questions above will help find out more.

This:

suggests the most likely culprit will be your internal wiring.

First thing is to provide a screen shot from your router showing your ADSL sync stats. Speed test results mean very little, the sync stats show the speed your connection is synced to the ISAM at.

Sounds like you could be connected to a Conklin and watch out for those Thomsom modems

Thanks for all of the quick replies, it's great that people are trying to help out. :)

As for modem stats and firmware, I have three different routers that I use... with no variation in results. I will post the stats from all three a bit later, as that might take some time.

I *think* I am connected to a cabinet, we have one of the big boxes about 2km down the road. (Excuse my lack of knowledge in the topic)

I did indeed do an isolation test, I did another this morning with again, very little improvement at all. We have 2 phone jacks in the house, I unplugged all phones and everything, tried it in both jacks, but no improvement.

As for the router stats and ADSL connection stats, I do have a screenshot of something, which I do hope is the right thing: 

And in regards to the Thomson modem, yes, one of the three is a Thomson, but the other two aren't.

Thanks for all of your help, I have decided to bite the bullet and call Telecom again to come out. I'm just crossing my fingers I won't have to replace the wiring.

That is good information, thanks... Do you have any information about noise/margin from your modem?

And how far are you from the exchange (or are you connected to a cabinet)?

With that sync speed I'm picking you're potenially on an old Conklin or ASAM and limited to ADSL speeds. If so you'll be BUBA based and you're possibly running into backhaul contention issues.

If this is the case you're possibly stuck in an unfortunate situation where not a log can be done in the short term. You may well however be in an RBI area where the cabinet where you could be upgraded to an ISAM over the next few years.

Guessing you live on waitetuna valley road - well thats where the cabinet is - so ull be on an asam fed from that cabinet so ur slow speeds will b from congestion in the cabinet

This will impact all customers connected to the cabinet not matter what ISP they are with
