Just received a heads up that later today Telecom will announce something related to roaming:

"Telecom is announcing today a breakthrough approach to charges for international data roaming."

There is a release coming 1pm and an audio conference about this. I will post here as soon as I have more information.

I just read the previous locked thread about this and was amused by wellygary's comment - "I eagerly await being disappointed".

I was briefed on the changes this morning and the press release is absolutely correct when they say this is a breakthrough.

They could also say revolutionary, a call to arms, a shot over the bow of the competitors.

Call it what you will, but come press release time I am pretty sure most travelling New Zealanders will be pleased.

The views expressed by me are not necessarily those of my employer Chorus NZ Ltd

I have also seen the press release, and its definitely a welcoming surprise, especially to people travelling overseas.

On top of the news due out, I have a $100 account credit to anyone who wants to come to Telecom and join one of the open term smartphone plans.  Just email me for the details.

Is it a good idea to advertise here? It you can offer me a better deal for $39 than 2d I'll take it.

Anything thats 30% more expensive than buying a local prepaid sim in the destination country will be a disappointment to me.

eg, I paid $50 in the USA for 1 or 2 gig of mobile data and several hundred minutes of free calling on my iphone.  I'd be happy to pay $80usd for the same roaming deal, but not more. Maths not exact but you get the point.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to yawn at todays announcement.

I could better that with Telecom's $29 deal.  You might get 500mb data, but more mins, and with the roaming deal to come out, a way better pricing deal.  Just email me if you want more info re the $100.  I cant see your email, so cant DM you.

As for the $50USD for a gb overseas - stay tuned, you may be emailing me to!

The only "game changer" I can think of is if we can take our Plan Minutes + Text + Data to OZ ... Just like the ozzys can do.

To do with Data. Unlimited data on a fixed cap/day, I have been told for major tourist countries. The price is also very cheap :-)

Do whatever you want to do man.

Nobody in Aussie has that. Roaming here (to NZ) is a rip off.

The problem with what you want however is that the EU had big issues with it.

Going back to the launch of 3 in the early 2000's this was a key feature they offered - you could roam on any 3 network around the world and use your included minutes as though you were at home.

When dominant European networks started looking at this however they were warned about the anti competive nature of what they were about to do - letting a Vodafone customer for example roam on any Vodafone network around Europe without incurring roaming surcharges could be anti competitive because of the big players could offer it. Smaller carriers would have been left out in the cold since they would have been unable to offer the same service.

Sometimes what customers see as being a good deal is frowned on by regulators who see such things as anti competitive. Yes it would be nice for VF to offer fully zero rated trans tasman roaming, but I know both the ACCC and Commerce Commission have expressed private views on this in the past when the issue was been discussed at a high level.

Well we don't even have that domestically so I can't foresee it happening with roaming.
