joker97:
joker97: can i ask - how do i know if there is already a master filter? i just checked my modem down attentuation modem says 20dB. if only one phone jack can have broadband is that the sign of a master filter?

does a master filter allow phone line to be connected to that broadband jack? the jack that gives me broadband also allows a phone line to be connected ... not a master filter is it?

No, You will have a separate Jack for the Broadband and another for the Phone if you have a xDSL splitter installed.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Jas777: This may or may not be a silly question but....

If you upgrade to VDSL does it make connecting to servers in the US or UK a lot faster? I ask this as I used to belong to MLBTV but gave it up as it kept on dropping between SD and HD mode due to not enough speed between here and the US.

Thanks in advance for any answers

Yes and no.. I'm with Snap with 45/10 and I can get line speed to servers in the US and Europe but it takes a couple of threads to do it. A single thread usually tops out at about 15Mbps in ideal conditions (i.e. West Coast US)... That's still pretty good compared to most ADSL lines. YMMV depending on how the MLB player works and where their content is.

polglase: I've spent most of the morning searching Telecom's website and on hold to their call centre... can someone give me a link to sign up to a 12 month VDSL connection with the free season pass to the EPL?

Going through the sign up online only offers a $200 discount on the connection.

The call centre say I have to sign up online to get the free season pass...

Because Telecom's special offer is not available until 1 August, 2013;  Telecom customers can pre-register interest in the offer via  www.telecom.co.nz/football. We will email customers as soon as www.PremierLeaguePass.com is available from Telecom.

Interesting point about confirmation. I signed up yesterday, and like others, I don't even have a confirmation email with a refernce number or anything. Surely that wouldn't have been too hard to provide?

EDIT - or even a reference within MyTelecom?

I'm guessing they are pretty busy. I know I have been waiting for the VDSL announcement for a while (like others must have been also).

I am waiting for a call from them now.

Hi guys,

I know the frontline teams are being slammed at the moment, and this is flowing on thru to Chorus and their provisioning teams. Please be patient as we are all trying to adhere to our SLA's as much as possible, but delays for processing of new services are inevitable as all the early adopters try to get connected.

Having said that, if anyone is still waiting from yesterday morning feel free to PM me your phone or account number and I will check up on it for you.

Thanks,
Simon

Just got my confirmation email (literally just now - minutes after posting I hadn't).

I ordered yesterday morning.

If you're getting VDSL it's best to grab a larger data cap at the same time, so $95 w/ 80gb will be your go which is still quite cheap for what you're getting :)

Oh I fully agree, just an observation.  Some may be happy with their data allowance, but are keen to have higher speeds.  eg skype HD calling/youtube buffering etc.

From personal experience those on a lower data cap might find the experience more frustrating just due to the fact it's so much easier to hit that 30gb cap then all the sudden find you're slowed down to 65kbit (from 40mbit) - Skype for example will use that extra upload if it's available + has a HD camera to use. It's better to have plenty of data than not enough with residential broadband plans! You'll find that 90% of those on the 30gb plan find the speeds are enough for what they use the internet for. I couldn't believe it myself but my parents use in excess of 40gb per month on a 6mbit rural connection! It really comes down to what you're using the internet for though.

I rang the 0800 number and spoke with a very helpful guy. Got everything sorted over the phone and got a confirmation email by about 8:00pm. The modem should arrive by the end of the week and the Chorus tech will show up on Tuesday morning, which I already had booked as annual leave. Sweet.
