So my suggestion for the new router (telecom wifi hotspots) has been taken to it's logical conclusion.

Just in time for me to emigrate...

Ok, that settles it, am going to move my mostly unusable 2degrees 19 plan to telecom to ensure I can keep using the hotspots.

Yep all the Thomsons and Huaweis have this stuff built-in ready for the ISPs to enable... I think there have already been some trials by operators overseas... if it does take off it'll still be a few years yet they will need to implement CG-NAT stuff first.

Yeah I can do it on my current router too, doesn't mean I'm going to take the time out to enable/set it up. I know it would have to be an opt-in style thing, but I don't see why they couldn't deliver it over another vlan to ensure it's private and doesn't interrupt with the users normal internet usage, if they could do that then having it enabled by default wouldn't be as big an issue.

I'm just throwing out the idea as they obviously want to aggressively take on the mobile data market, and what better way to do that than leverage the UFB/VDSL user base.

It was something I did raise. Few things need to align first but we will see eh. ;)

You mean so people can install a Telecom router in areas with high traffic volumes just to sniff traffic of Telecom customers? Worst idea ever.

You mean so people can install a Telecom router in areas with high traffic volumes just to sniff traffic of Telecom customers? Worst idea ever.

They can do that on their own already! (Especially using a wifi pineapple, that'll pretend to be any unencrypted wifi SSID that you have saved in your phone's wifi AP list)

I have always found it bizarre how the Telco's here never jumped on the national WiFi bandwagon - its almost like the management viewed it as a competing product rather than an opportunity to get point of presence.

The really smart player would be a third party entity that enables individual shops and locations and then leases the network to all three Telco's. You'd think the government would have done that on top of their national broadband initiative. At least some of the local councils have seen sense.

Why? Like the business model of city wide Metropolitan WiFi it's failed miserably overseas.

The UK is possibly the exception to this where BT Openzone does work well.
