Why do people need to have it explained? Just say "sites hosted in NZ are unmetered, use our online tool to check if the website you're interested in is metered or unmtered".

Unmetered may be too far, maybe it just counts at half the rate as international traffic.

Though caps these days are high enough for everything I need to do, but if all TV and movies start streaming in high def then it definitely won't be.

Sure come and explain that to my parents or sisters what about when the hosting provider changes but the domain is still .co.nz but now it's in the hosted out of the US

No one is going to bother to check every single .nz site to see if it's hosted here or elsewhere before they visit it - I know I wouldn't.

The site may be hosted in NZ, but often the content may not be.

I'll throw this into the mix as to why "unmetered national" becomes very tricky:

Last week we noticed some content-cache traffic going over our Australian peering link when it normally is hosted a few ms away here in NZ.

Turns out it still was being hosted in NZ, except the cache's international upstream had mucked some engineering config up causing the traffic to route internationally where ISPs (such as ourselves) happen to have a peering upstream in Sydney.

From our perspective, the content may have been hosted in NZ but it was no longer "national".

(We got this fixed).

More like being sold a Ferrari and then driving it a lot and guzzling up a lot of petrol. I know I'd rather get somewhere faster/download something faster, than wait longer. But I'm still travelling the same distance/downloading the same amount. Pretty sure busses/dial-up are unlimited travel/data, but good luck getting anywhere/anything in a hurry.

When services like that actually start existing in NZ then I'm sure those services will strike a deal with ISPs to unmeter their content. Better IMO to have a short exhaustive list of sites that are unmetered, than to have a vague definition of national. Also with a specific list of sites the unmetering could be guaranteed, removing the possibility that strange routing errors would end up with customers being charged for something that was just a few hours ago unmetered. Bonus, if the international traffic costs ISPs and their still unmetering it then they have more incentive to fix it quicker, restoring your connections back to lower latency faster.

I suspect that's more a discussion about the contentious issue of net neutrality.

Why should people who made no investment in the infrastructure of the Internet network, make lots of money from it (Netflix, Amazon etc.) when the carriers who made the investment gain no business benefit apart from whatever they get paid for access.

Not a situation that applies in NZ since very few if any organisations make lots of money from providing Internet based services (I don't mean Trademe or e-tailers).

How in unmetered traffic fair? It breaks fundamental principals of net neutrality.
