Hi,

Not sure what the issue is with Telecom and PSN, it's definitely not shaping as others have said.

I had the same problems as you did with Telecom (VDSL).  I found that streaming to my laptop, desktop, iPad, or ATV3 was fine,  but streaming to my PS3 and WDLive was poor and constantly buffering  (it always stopped at 25% for some strange reason!)

Happy to report that now I am on BigPipe VDSL I have been streaming stuff via my PS3 (and PS4)  in Super HD with no issues.
We have reports of other customers doing the same, and I am yet to hear of anybody having issues with streaming on BigPipe.
Definitely keen to hear how your experience goes when you switch to us.

cheers

Im now connected with BigPipe and I got no more buffering issue with Netflix using PS3 but for some reason video quality is just maxing up to 480 and not even going to 720... I have not watch HD videos and it's been 10-15 mins already.

Netflix playback is set to HD. PS3 connected via ethernet. using Technicolor 589 VDSL. and got 22/3 (up/down).
Q: what's your modem and link speed to US?

Good to hear no buffering anymore, but unusual that you couldn't get HD.

At the moment I'm using the same modem as you, although I have been trying a few different ones over the last few weeks.  I was streaming netflix last night no issues, sorry I didn't check my speed to the states last night (I'm at work now), but previously when I checked it was about 9Mbps I think.  I assume you got your speeds back to front up there.  should be 22 down, 3 up.  Although 3 up sounds fairly slow for VDSL, even when you are on the margin for distance.

So just a couple of questions that might be really obvious:

Was the content you were streaming actually available in HD?  Not all content on Netflix is. A lot of TV shows and movies, especially the older ones, only go up to 480p anyway, even on PS3.

Did you try lots of different bits of content over the 15 mins, or let one piece run for a while?  Netflix runs ABR (adaptive bitrate) where it start the stream in low res and then over the course of time gradually increases it.  Sometimes it can take up to 5 minutes to get up to HD, although it is usually quicker than that. So if you were trying several pieces of content over that 15 minutes it's possible you didn't give it long enough to get up to HD.

Were you streaming or downloading anything else at the same time that might be taking up a lot of bandwidth? (e.g. downloading a game patch, torrenting)

I get 7-8Mb down from US and yeah, my 22/3 up is a bit low.. and my att on upstream is so high (only got 8.5 on adsl)
Uptime:    0 days, 0:28:50
DSL Type:    ITU-T G.993.2
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:    2,665 / 21,757
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [B/B]:    0 / 0
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]:    6.6 / 12.9
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:    56.6 / 22.7
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:    11.8 / 12.3

* Yes, the tv/movies im trying last night was all HD (House of cards, scandal, Olympus has fallen, MI3) I did watch them about 30-1 hr and almost 2am still getting flat 480.

* no one is using internet last night except me as all kids and wife already in bed. started to view around 10pm until 2am but no go.. getting only flat 480. not even attempting to go 720..

this morning, I tried testing getflix.com.au hoping I could get at least 720 - it was pretty fast that would start 240,288,384,480 then stops there..

so something is limiting my connection to 480 using PS3.

tested my speedtest and getting 7Mb from US (10am).

Im now clueless, what could be the reason.. was thinking maybe my attenuation is high? (my upstream) - do you think this would make difference if I go back to ADSL? (Bigpipe).

btw, I even uninstalled and reset my netflix account on ps3... but no go..

It's odd that it maxes out at 480p.
We did add quite a few more customers yesterday, so I guess it's possible they were 'stress testing' their connections a full line rate and that spiked our peak time bandwidth and caused a bit of congestion, but that will be resolved in the next couple of days as we are adding more soon.

Do you have any other devices that can run netflix to try out, to rule out the PS3?  e.g. Apple TV, Roku.
Some content is also available in HD on the browser version of netflix, so give that a go too.
You can also 'force' HD on the browser version (when the content is available) link here on how to do it http://www.rewatchable.com/manually-force-hd-playback-on-netflix-watch-instantly/    for HD content you can select up to 3000kbps (which gives you 720p), non HD only goes up to 1750kbps (480p)

You could also try some other services from overseas to compare e.g. Vudu, Hulu plus, BBC iPlayer  and see whether you are able to get HD on those
Have you tried Youtube in 1080p?

ETA:  It's also quite possible it was Netflix having issues too
http://downrightnow.com/netflix
suggests they had a widespread service disruption about 16 hours ago (about the time you were trying to watch it) so possibly content was being re-routed from different servers rather than the closest one, which could easily affect the max bandwidth you can get with them.

Heya, I am now able to watch SuperHD started at 1230pm today.. already done 2 movies and seems ok.
to me it looks like timing issue (peak times) or possible routing issue... currently using now getflix.com.au (DNS) - will test unblock-us tonight and see how it goes.

update:

4th movie and got superhd in just couple of seconds!!! yahoo!

looks like BigPipe will be my permanent one!

will test tonight and everything ok.

Telecom users, you might want to get static ip as per previous comments.. then assign to bypass proxy and see how that goes. or otherwise switch to BigPipe! :-)

ps. just bought Draytek 130 modem now as telecom technicolor will be returned tomorrow - good thing with Telecom as they wont charge me with termination fee.

Yeah I'm in the process of trying to get my IP off the proxy. I'm with Telecom VDSL so will report back how it goes.

oh let us know if there is extra charge for that?

btw, getflix.com.au is cheaper about AU$1.xx if you like their page on fb.

Statics are free on 150GB and 500GB plans or $20.45 (incl GST) on smaller plans.

I spoke to Level 2 support and requested I be put on the bypass cache list.

He said it's unlikely I'd be allowed but that he'd put a request through to the network guys anyway.

If anyone here is from networks and could "allow" it, that would be much appreciated :-)

Telecom ref is 231217415526

Thanks :-)

Just to give another update. still streaming SuperHD and really awesome!!! happy with my new provider!

btw, just to share this re my dns

unblock-us: took 4 mins to display superHD
getflix.com.au: took only 1 min to display SuperHD

I'll probably switch with getflix - only downside is they only have US and UK (Netflix) for now.. but they will add more soon.

Glad it's all good. Mine was going a wee bit slow last night too, but tonight seems fine. Might try getflix too. See how they go.

My request to have my IP not go via the cache was declined. No reason given.

If I want to watch Netflix I will have to switch ISP.
