Hi all,

just have a Sierra 595 PCMCIA Data card that switches to Dormant mode after 10 secs of connection.

It shows

(Dormant)   11s

Rx       427b
Tx       325b

Have updated the whatcher software (Windows XP)
Have checked Sierra website and only tells me that Dormant mode initiates after a period of inactivity (which the user determines)
Have uninstalled and reinstalled twice
Contacted Telecom Helpdesk..... :S
They told me its an option that can be disconnected via the Connection Manager Settings, which unfortunately is not the case.

And yet here I am hoping the one of you Geekzoners will be able to help me out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

RB85

There is no "easy" way for the user to change this 10 second setting.

Is there a problem with the card going into Dormant mode? Do you realise you do not loose your IP connectivity when this happens as the "dormancy" relates to the radio interface.

The setting is there as soon as it is installed and connected.
10 secs inactivity is not long.

The problem with the dormancy is that it doesnt give me a connection.

Some facts about dormancy.

Dormancy is a feature of CDMA2000 and WCDMA networks that enables more efficient utilisation of radio spectrum resources.

Both the base station and the device have timers regarding when dormancy will be activated.
TNZ set devices at 10 seconds of user traffic inactivity.

Dormancy is activated (transition from Active state to Dormant state) when either the device or base station detect a lack of user traffic across the radio interface.

Dormancy is only activated when there is a lack of user traffic across the radio interface.

Transition from dormant state to active state (re-establishing the radio interface) takes 2-3 seconds.

Transition from active state to dormant state will not occur if there is user traffic being sent over the radio interface.

The above are facts.

Based on the above....
Dormancy is not stopping you from using your Sierra595 but the dormant state of the 595 indicates that the device (and/or your laptop) is not sending or receiving any IP traffic to/from the far end.

Actually this may be a faulty card, with 99.99999% of connections on the whatcher you should see a number of KB of data show before it goes dormant with no activity. Either you have a faulty card or some thing else is causing this to happen.

I have seen this occur with firewalls and other such software and the card cannot access the internet, if all of the settings are right on the network (ask the help desk or even better ask a dealer to check with Dealer support) then install in another laptop if you can with your card and latest version from Sierra wireless. If it works and connects and rx/tx show in the KB's say 5 RX and 2- 5KB TX, before stopping sending in the recieving then it is your laptop, other wise it is the card. Go to a dealer (if you purchased from a dealer) get them to place a working card if possible in the machine to test as well.

You can also disconnect a couple of times and try reconnecting to the network. Also attempt to change the card to EVDO only if in EVDO coverage. I have seen this heaps on the 580, 25% faulty card, 75% issues on laptop
