Yeap I am seeing this starting too.  Happy new year From Xtra and Yahoo and some idiot hackers.

Just had my second spam for the day, from Compromised client accounts.

3 for me so far today. Seem to be the same accounts that I got them from last time

Edit: Ok tried to forward the emails to abuse@Xtra but all 3 were rejected because of spam content in the email :)

That's one way to bury your head in the sand about the problems.

edit:

Telecom is investigating of a potential hack - considering that there have been several reports already it is quite likely :

I just can't understand why Telecom haven't updated their network status page, according to there website there aren't any probems. Even Stuff have got a story about  it now.

It's easier to log a copy of each spam email with SpamCop and add abuse@xtra.co.nz as a reporting address. ;-)

I got the same spam from an Earthlink address so it might not just be Telecom's email that has a problem.

I can't see why Telecom haven't yet dumped Yahoo as their email provider

Contract(s) and money I'd imagine.

It's like the car recall thing from Fight Club.

Athlonite: I can't see why Telecom haven't yet dumped Yahoo as their email provider

Probably a huge cost involved, and who are they going to switch to? I don't believe google offer ISPs a service that they can subcontract to, like yahoo do. Maybe they could look at ditching email altogether. I think there are now a few ISPs that no longer provide email services.

Ditching email would see thousands of their (less than savvy) customers in a hole. However Xtra could easily run their own mail servers - like they used to in the old days.

Money ??? you mean Telecom don't have enough of it to run their own gear they used to do it years ago before they went with MSN (until MS pulled it out of NZ) and then switched to Yahoo I think as NZ's largest ISP they could quite well afford to run their own email servers it's not like they don't make a butt load of cash from us

I see the Herald's tech-savvy journos are referring to this as "a possible virus".
