A friend's telecom technicolour Tg582n stopped allowing their wifi password on multiple devices and I couldn't get it to connect to their laptop on Ethernet either so I reset it using the paper clip method. The router seems to have retained the old SSID and wifi password but not the broadband login name and password. The firmware GUI now works fine on Ethernet and on wifi using the old wifi password and unlike before all my wireless gear like iPad and phone will now happily connect to the routers' signal.

Is that usual? For it to retain the original SSID and wifi pass but not the broadband username and pass?

She's ringing Telecom to get them.

being a telecom connection, shouldnt it simply default to the (orwhatever it is now..) they use port based authentication.

assuming SSID is default, its probably a calculation off your mac address.

Oh! So it doesn't need a username and password? is what's on there, I just figured it was a place holder.
Her router's at my place so I haven't been able to test it for a connection.

To answer my own question, see thread and a password of "password" is all you need

As an update, took the router back to her place, plugged it in, chose her SSID on my iPad and put in the wifi password, got prompted for a user/pass on my browser, got a radio button to turn on internet, did, and it all ran sweet afterward including her laptop.
