Hi there,
I have recently switched to Telecom Fibre30 - originally I was on ADSL2+

The installation has gone fine and the supplied Huawei modem works fine too - I am able to surf the internet.

However, I have a Asus DSL-N66U modem which I very much want to continue using - apparently the modem is fibre ready but I am really struggling to configure it to make it work.

I have read a number of other threads in the forum of people having similar problems who have decided to use the supplied modem or go out and buy another - I would prefer to do neither.

My modems firmware is updated to version 1.0.7.0 which apprently includes Telecom NZ in the release notes.

Can anyone help? Screenshots below

I have tried the follow settings to no avail:
MTU - 0
IPv4 settings - automatic
Password - password and telecom1
Enable PPPoE Relay - dsiabled
Enable firewall - Yes
DSL modulation - VDSL2

can you make the WAN configuration image bigger, or provide a direct link? its a little hard to read.


i see your also configuring for VDSL in your last image, why are you configuring DSL at all, if your on fiber?

Hi there,
Concerning the last page being configured for DSL - well as I said, I was previously on ADSL2+ If any of these settings need to change, please let me know.

As far as I am aware these can not be used with UFB as they do not do VLAN 10 tagging on the WAN port.

The spec says ADSL, VDSL and fibre, which is true, however not all fiber uses VLAN10 tagging.

To be honest you are better off using the supplied router, it was designed for the job.

That's odd - some people have said that they have been able to get it working, and there is a field for VLAN ID (which is set to 10). 

If these modems cannot be used for UFB then I afraid I am going to be taking it back to the people I purchased it off - because I believe this has been sold under false pretenses - I specifically asked if the modem would work on Telecom Fibre and was told yes it would.

Have you compared all the settings to those of the Huawei?

Have you asked Telecom support to assist - they should be able to offer some help even if you are not using the default device...

Have called them and they told me that they would refer my situation to their team leader who should call me today - they did not (probably because it is a bank holiday).

I plan to call both Telecom and Asus NZ on Monday.

I have my HG630b running in Bridged Mode with a TP-Link Gargoyle-running router. Seems to be working despite the fact that Gargoyle cannot do VLAN tagging so that may be an option. (Telecom & Chorus UFB)

To confuse the issue not all UFB providers require VLAN10 tagging. Not all Fibre providers do UFB.
You could ask telecom to remove the VLAN10 tagging, I believe some providers will do this, I don't know if Telecom do this or not I don't know.
There may be a firmware update required that is no listed, I know this is the case for a Ubiquiti router, the retailer may be able to help you.

Telecom don't offer the ability to offered an untagged uni (ie remove the VLAN10 requirement).

Chorus (and all LFCs) have the ability to offer this, but some RSPs won't be able to accommodate this in their network setup.

I think that this is not the first time that someone has tried to use this brand of CPE with Telecom UFB and it is coming up short.
The settings you have appear to be mostly correct - you should set the IPv4 settings to get the IP and DNS automatically.

The Broadband helpdesk will not be able to help you any further I would say - it's not a device that Telecom supports or knows anything about, and cannot guarantee that it will work on our network.  All they will give you is the settings you require.  I.e.

WAN Vlan tagging on, VLAN ID 10, .1p=0
PPPoE
Username: user@xtrabb.co.nz
Password: password

(actually username and password don't really matter, but it doesn't hurt to have them in the correct format).

I would suggest plugging your PC into the WAN port and doing a wireshark capture for a couple of minutes and posting the results here, but I seem to recollect that Windows strips the vlan tags (if they are there at all) before winpcap actually sees the frames, so thiswould not help.
If I were you I'd call Asus and request their assistance to configure their device that they say will work on our network.

It does include Telecom NZ - it includes a profile to configure VDSL settings for Telecom NZ.

Hi there

As an ex DSL-N66U user, I have to sadly tell you that this modem does not work with Telecom Fibre.

I have posted a similar topic in this forum (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=39&topicid=143579) and I even called Telecom/ASUS for support but no solution.

Technically this modem should work because it supports fibre. But I tried multiple settings for 2 days straight and still can't figure out the problem. I assumed that this modem just doesn't support Telecom fibre (or no VLAN tagging).

I returned the DSL-N66U for an AC66U and it works perfectly. In theory you don't need a "modem" (ONT is basically your fibre modem), you just need a router that support VLAN tagging.

The shop I bought it from said I can also use Netgear NightHawk but I ended up with AC66U because I like ASUS and I heard nice thing about AC66U in terms of third party firmware support...etc.

Anyway, I hope my reply helps you in some way :)

Thanks for all your help. Yes noobstick I read you forum message - I just dont have the luxury of buying a new modem.

After spending nigh on $300 for this asus only 6 weeks ago, I want to get my money's worth. I will try Asus and then see if I can get an exchange from the shop I bought it from.

Thanks everyone for your help - keep throwing any suggestions if anything new occurs.

Well I exchange my DSL-N66U for my current AC66U, so I am sure you can return your N66U for something else.
